Co-chairs: Vickie Baily and Suzi Gifford

Welcome! The historic town of Garrett Park is such a great place to live, and among its many charms is the Art at Penn Place Gallery, located on the second floor of the historic Penn Place building, also home to the Post Office and Black Market Bistro. The purpose of the Gallery is to provide a vibrant venue in which local artis

ts can display their work, and also to provide an enjoyable gallery experience for Garrett Park residents and visitors. Exhibitions in a variety of media rotate every month, artwork is original and available for purchase, exhibit receptions provide fun opportunities to mingle with the artists and your neighbors, and admission is free! Exhibition selection and scheduling preference is given to artists who are current and former residents of Garrett Park. However, our Annual Garrett Park Juried Invitational Show, held in April, is open to all artists, 18 and over, who live in Montgomery County, and we also offer an Annual Youth Show for local young artists. A committee appointed by the Mayor of Garrett Park is responsible for managing the Gallery. For information about scheduling a solo show, or submitting an entry for the annual Invitational and Youth Shows, please use the message link at the top of this page and one of our Co-Chairs will contact you as soon as possible. Penn Place Gallery is so pleased to exhibit the lyrical calligraphy of Garrett Park artist, Nahid Tootoonchi. Nahid is a graphic designer, calligrapher, and educator, teaching graphic design at Towson University in Maryland. She has been studying classical Farsi calligraphy, in the style of Nastaligh and Shekasteh, with master calligraphers since 2013. Using various tools including bamboo pen and organic ink, Nahid layers Farsi letterforms to create abstract compositions that are inspired by music and Persian poetry. Displayed from May 18-June 13, this is a unique exhibition you won’t want to miss! Please join us for Nahid’s opening reception on Sunday, May 24, from 2-4pm.

A quick reminder to join us on Saturday, May 2nd, National Labyrinth Day, at Vickie Baily’s Exhibit Opening for “Living with a Labyrinth” at the Penn Place Gallery in Garrett Park (above the Post Office). Many residents of Garrett Park have walked by Vickie Baily’s beautiful labyrinth, others have discovered the peace and comfort of walking into it. In 2009, this 3000-year-old mythic symbol changed the landscape of Vickie’s garden, and for 17 years it has quietly watched the garden change around it.

From April 20 through May 16, you can see Vickie’s documentation of the ‘life’ of her labyrinth through her beautiful photographs exhibited at Penn Place Gallery. She will have a meet-the-artist reception on Saturday, May 2nd, which is, coincidentally, National Labyrinth Day! Those who attend the Gallery reception are also invited to visit the actual labyrinth, less than a block from the Gallery. Please join us ... everyone is welcome!

Penn Place Gallery is pleased to present the photographs of Garrett Park photographer, Tammy Trocki. ‘Street Portraits and Scenes’ includes images taken in Paris and Tuscany. Highlights include a sequence of a Tuscan storyteller from World War II, and a young ‘Brando in Paris'. ‘The Florentine’, featured below, captures a young man who could step out of a Renaissance painting. Tammy also uses Intentional Camera Motion to create more fluid and abstract images. Please stop by the Gallery from March 23 to April 18 to see this exhibit, and join us at Tammy’s Meet-the-Artist Reception on March 29, from 2-4pm.

We are pleased to present the work of two artists, Seth Campbell and John Weber, both students of the Master Artist Program at the Compass Atelier.

Seth Campbell creates oil paintings from life, elevating scenes and ordinary subjects that are often overlooked. He looks for harmony within dissonance, creating mood through quality of light and play of color, hoping to encourage viewers to look more closely and discover a more complex way of seeing.

John Weber paints largely from photos and sketches created during his travels in the U.S. and Europe. He is also a plein aire painter who loves discovering surprises through varying brushstrokes and the infinite combinations of color mixing.

Please stop by the Gallery from February 23 – March 21 to see their work, and join us for a Meet-the-Artists reception on Sunday, March 1, from 2-4pm.

We are thrilled to welcome artist Lynn Lewis back to Penn Place Gallery! Lynn is an award-winning plein air painter who developed her love of painting outdoors as a teenager, while painting alongside her father on family vacations. She enjoys painting in all seasons, discovering unusual places to set up her easel and meeting interesting people along the way! Especially fascinating is her technique of using strokes of color to capture fleeting moments of light and shadow.

In support of the people of Minnesota impacted by ICE activity, Lynn will donate 100% of all sales to help with rent relief, food banks, medical care, and legal assistance for families in need. Be sure to stop by the Gallery from January 25-February 21 to see her work!

Penn Place Gallery is pleased to present the paintings of Garrett Park watercolor artist, Martha Seigel! Martha’s retrospective show, ‘Painting in the Park’, highlights her life as a painter and teacher in Garrett Park, with plein air paintings, still life, and abstract works. Martha remembers first showing her paintings at the Garrett Park Town Hall and ringing the steeple bell! She was influential in introducing art to the walls of the Garrett Park Café before the current Gallery space existed.

Please join us for Martha’s artist reception on Sunday, December 7th, from 2-4pm, and celebrate her artistic life in Garrett Park. Martha’s paintings will be on exhibit until December 27th.

Penn Place Gallery is excited to welcome Jeffrey Human back to the Gallery! Jeff is a previous Garrett Park resident and we have enjoyed showing his work in the Gallery over the years. Currently, he is exploring abstract and semi-abstract paintings that express his memories, dreams, fantasies and reflections. His technique is ‘anything goes’ as he creates with acrylic, oil, collage, encaustic and resin, using rollers, brushes, a palette knife and even fingers! He often paints over paintings, creating layers of gesso and paint to add depth and texture. You won’t want to miss this stunning and colorful exhibit!

Jeffrey’s work will be on display from November 3-29, and he invites everyone to attend his Meet-the-Artist reception on Sunday, November 9, from 2-4pm. Please join us!
