Wheelock Academy Historic Site

Wheelock Academy Historic Site Wheelock Academy, a former Native American girl's boarding school founded in 1831, closed in 1955. We would love for you to spend some time with us.

When you visit the historic Wheelock Academy, it is like taking a step back in time. From the moment you drive through the gate onto the majestic grounds of the former girls' boarding school until you leave, you can almost sense the students who lived and were educated there. Touring the grounds, hearing the stories and visiting our museum to view the historical treasures that lie within, give vis

itors a look at what it was like during Wheelock's lively years. Though the students are gone now, and the dormitory and classrooms have been closed for many years, the Choctaw Nation takes pride in preserving the heritage and continuing to tell the amazing stories associated with the school. We offer many events during the year including movie nights, craft fairs, reunions and school tours. Come and be part of Wheelock Academy and its amazing history.

Campfires and Bigfoot
4/18/2026

We appreciate Troy and Tim spending time with us Saturday the 18th! We had a great evening and look forward to the next one scheduled for April 2028.

With that in mind, we may be making some changes to this event due to the amount of no-shows and the need of support for the potential restoration of Pushmataha and Wilson Halls. With the encouragement of Troy and local supporters, we will be initiating talks with the Chahta Foundation and our leadership in the near future to prepare for 2028.

Thank you to all who came and joined us Saturday evening!

Happy Birthday Councilman Tom! We appreciate your continuous support of Wheelock!

Pictured is the Pushmataha Hall at Wheelock Academy with the campus' water tower looming in the background. In the foreground is Kay Lorraine Lowry. At the time this photo was taken, 140 girls were enrolled at the academy.

Thank you and look forward to seeing you here!

Tonight, we closed out our 2026 Mondays in March speaker series with McCurtain County Historian, Kenny Sivard presenting on The Life of Silsainey Ward Jones. She was a fascinating lady with a generous soul and Wheelock Academy was a recipient of her generosity! And we were very fortunate to have several of her descendants with us tonight!

Thank you to each of the speakers who presented this month. They were all very informative and engaging! We also want to thank everyone who attended one (or several) of our five sessions. We very much appreciated your participation and support!

We will take a break for a couple of months before we start planning our October Tuesday Talks series!
