Artist’s Notes:
“This painting really strikes a chord with what we’ve been going through. During our nation's war for independence, George Washington’s continental army encamped in Valley Forge for the winter. The winter was especially brutal, and the conditions were horrible for the men. Many of the demoralized men left and gave up the fight. Washington, knowing that the cause for liberty was losing and his army was dwindling, repeatedly asked for help from Continental Congress. Any help that came was so inconsequential that it really did nothing to aid the problems of sickness, starvation and hypothermia. Washington’s aides reported that many times he would walk a distance away from the men, and pray. I sometimes wonder what burdens he lifted in prayer and if he ever got direction or comfort. But something amazing did happen during all the misery and endless bad news...the men began training and training hard amid the bitter cold. When spring finally came they proved to be a significantly better fighting force which set them on a course to win the war! This painting captures Washington’s duress one freezing cold night. After dropping to his knees, you can see a faint whisper of a prayer leaving his lips.” ~ Abraham Hunter
