Thank you to everyone who joined us last Saturday for our "Digging Deeper: Alice Livingston and the Making of Clermont’s Historic Gardens" program. Despite the rainy weather, it was a sold-out event! Guests from far and wide attended the event, some traveling as far away as Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Jersey!

Horticulturalist Leslie Reed started the program with a selection of archival photos taken by Alice Livingston. An avid photographer, Alice documented her travels through Italy in the 1920s and became inspired to create the gardens at Clermont upon their return to the estate in the 1930s. Following the presentation, guests were then led on a tour of the historic gardens, where they learned more about the historic plantings found in the Walled, Wilderness, and Cutting Gardens. After the tour, guests were invited to create their own eco-friendly seedling starter pots, where they planted seeds collected from four plants found in the historic gardens: hollyhocks, wild senna, sweet alyssum, and nasturtium.

Thank you to The Garden Conservancy for partnering with us on this program.

Join us TOMORROW as we explore how Alice Livingston's creativity shaped the timeless landscape we enjoy today.

During her time in Italy, Alice Delafield Clarkson Livingston (1872–1964) fell in love with the beauty of classical garden design. When she returned home to Clermont, she blended those Italian influences with the charm and natural grace of English-style gardens. In the 1930s, Alice created the Walled, Wilderness, and Cutting Gardens, each with its own character and story to tell.
We recommend comfortable footwear, as the tour will take place outdoors on grassy and uneven surfaces.

This Digging Deeper is presented in partnership with The Garden Conservancy.

Today is World Bee Day 🐝

We're celebrating with a Clermont "pollinator parade"! Pollinators play a crucial role in the health and wellness of local and global ecosystems. Most flowering plants are pollinator-dependent, meaning that their survival as a species is directly tied to the local pollinator population. Planting native flowers is a great way to help local pollinators survive and thrive. Native plants provide food, water, and shelter throughout spring, summer, and fall. At Clermont, we are proud to include native ornamental plantings throughout our historic gardens.

May is National Photography Month 📸

To celebrate, we are sharing photos of Clermont's flora and fauna that you can find this spring! There's always something new blooming in our historic gardens. The koi have returned to the Reflection Pond and so have the frogs and toads, so be sure to stop by on your next visit.

Migratory birds such as the yellow warbler start to appear in the Hudson Valley around late-May to early June, so be sure to keep an eye out for some of our feathered friends! Want to learn more about birdwatching? Be sure to join us on June 6 for a bird walk with the Alan Devoe Bird Club. Find out more in the comments.

Join us for a guided tour this weekend! ✨

This Saturday, uncover the stories of the enslaved and paid servants of Clermont on the Those Who Served tour. Over the course of three centuries, hundreds of people worked at Clermont to keep the Livingston family comfortable. For nearly 100 years, the mansion was run by a mostly enslaved staff. By the 1830s, this staff was completely replaced by paid labor. Though many of their stories were lost, recent research has revealed new details about those who worked for the Livingston family.

Then on Sunday, we will look back through generations of the Livingston family and explore how their role as landowners shaped the land and local communities on the Livingston's Landscape guided walking tour. From indigenous tribes to enslaved men and tenant farmers, the relationship with the land and those who worked it changed many times over the past 300 years.

Both tours meet at the Visitor Center at 2 p.m. We hope to see you there!
