The Art of J. Jordan Bruns This is the artist page for J. Jordan Bruns. Most updates will be images of artwork in progress, and posting of upcoming exhibitions.

I am fascinated with creating dualities; destruction and rebirth, order and chaos, old and new, serious and whimsical. Often what drives the paintings are the paradoxes that are created when these dialectics intertwine. The materials used in the paintings are meant to emphasize these dualities. When chaotic hardware store paints juxtaposed with meticulous oil paint, the images are a blend of uncon

trollable/unrecognizable with precise/distinguishable imagery. The painting process itself flips between making order and chaos. Sometimes the unpredictable paints work well and help with my artistic goal, other times it feels like they have banded together in a mutiny against me. The paintings are left as “finished” when I feel all of the elements, all of the dialectics, and all of the different mediums have color and movement harmony.

So happy that Barbara Gruber will be presenting her incredible work for the ACO community tomorrow, Saturday, September 20th from 10:30-11:30am. She is so talented with a real eye for color. I thought I would include some photos of when we painted together for back in 2013 at a fundraiser for the Childrens Inn at NIH. Look how many brushes she fit in one hand! I mean WOW!

I've painted/drawn the Carousel Glen Echo so many times over the (almost) 16 years of being at the Stone Tower Studio. I thought I did a better of documenting all the times I have painted it, but apparently this is what I have. A lot of the time it is sold off the easel (and I forget to photograph it), a lot of the time I have to scrape it out (and definitely don't photograph it). I'm not sure that I will get tired of painting it.
It's my haystack.

Bethesda Painting Awards Review in WaPo

"Realism rules in the 20th annual Bethesda Painting Awards, whose finalists’ work is at Gallery B. The selection includes Lou Haney’s heavily patterned domestic scenes, Barbara Epstein Gruber’s handsome traditional landscape and Mary Proenza’s renderings of such autobiographical subjects as her mother’s broken leg. Yet the most striking contributions are by J. Jordan Bruns and Ellen Burchenal, the two artists whose styles are the least literal."

Last night was thrilling. I received the 2nd place award in the Bethesda Painting Awards, hosted by the Bethesda Urban Partnership, Catriona Fraser, and the remarkable Carol Trawick. Mrs. Trawick is a true patron of the arts in the DMV area, generously supporting the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture. Many, many thanks also to Virginia Anderson, Scott Hutchison and Nicole M. Santiago for jurying me into the show. The reception is June 14 from 6-8pm at Gallery B in Bethesda so please mark your calendar!
