Walter Bourchier Devereux's original interests in Colorado centered on Aspen's silver mines and smelting industry. He arrived in the Glenwood Springs area in 1885 and purchased the property that would become the site of the Hot Springs Pool and Bathhouse. Isaac Cooper sold his Yampah Hot Springs property and 10 surrounding acres to Devereux for $125,000 as he was in failing health and did not have the financial means to pursue his dream. Cooper's ideas for the property were brought to fruition by Devereux. Devereux's Colorado Land and Improvement Company would go on to bring electricity to Glenwood Springs, complete a project supplying fresh water to residents, build the pool and bathhouse, expand the V***r Cave and construct the Hotel Colorado. His Grand River Coal and Coke Company also built coke ovens to process coal from mines stretching from New Castle to Carbondale. The property on the north side of the Grand River that was known as the Wulfsohn Mansion/Ranch was at one time owned by Walter Devereux. He called his home there, "Cedarbank", a luxurious home that had originally been built by Captain E.E. Prey.
