Meet the "Faces behind the Spaces" here at Y&M!
First up in our Sunday Spotlight?
The clever picker/designer/eye extraordinaire

KELLIE THOMAS from Kellie Thomas

What is your Zodiac sign?
Cancer.

When you are not at York and Main, what are you likely to be doing?
I am hitting thrift stores and estate sales, going places with my boys, or rearranging the house.

If you could have dinner with anyone, living or deceased, who would it be and why?
Janeane Garofalo — a hero since my youth. Her deadpan wit and her general all-around badass-ness have always been inspiring.

What is your weirdest or most useless talent?
The ability to always choose the wrong direction. When we are on trips, if I feel strongly we should turn left, we turn right, and it is always the correct choice.

Who is your favorite Muppet, and why?
I have to pick two: the duo in the balcony, Statler and Waldorf, and Animal. Discerning critic and enthusiastic chaos. Kind of like my personality.

What keeps you inspired and motivated?
I am inspired by finding treasures and researching the things I find. Currently, my desire to stay out of the rat race (I was let go from my job at the end of the school year due to budget cuts) is an enormous motivator right now.

What is something everyone loves but you just don't feel the same about? Or, what is your most unpopular opinion?
Panera. What is the big deal?

What did you want to be when you grew up?
An archaeologist and high school history teacher. Picture a female Indiana Jones.

What is one thing you would like people to know about your shop?
I’d love to do more personal vintage sourcing. If there’s something you’ve been hunting for but just can’t seem to find, send me your wish list and your budget. I’m always out treasure hunting, and if I spot the perfect piece, you’ll be the first to know!

Favorite thing in your shop right now?
A 1920s wooden travel trunk marked VIC (Virginia Intermont College) with the initials R.S.T. It was an all-female college. I love imagining who R.S.T. was and what adventures she had!

So excited to be part of thos afternoon!

We’re taking Retail 360 on the road for an afternoon of holiday inspiration! 🎁

On November 4, Retail 360: Holiday Customer Experience will take us through three local businesses to experience the season from a shopper’s point of view. We’ll start at York and Main, make our way to Up South, and wrap things up with discussion and bites at Kelsick Specialty Market.

Facilitated by our very own Jenny Crittenden, the afternoon will give retailers a chance to explore different spaces, see the details shaping each customer experience, and leave thinking about what they might bring back to their own businesses this holiday season.

Save the date for November 4 from 3:00–5:00 PM. Reserve your spot today: https://bit.ly/3WeAJrw

The Virginia Commission for the Arts’ Small and Rural Arts Initiative (SARA) came to Gloucester for a half-day workshop hosted at the Fine Arts Museum of Gloucester yesterday. It was the first of two free in-person workshops in the region. We learned concrete strategies for identifying and articulating the value of community-engaged arts initiatives in rural communities and small towns. There was a fabulous turnout of folks from all over the region. I am quite encouraged by living in a state that values the arts and realizes not all the action is in the big cities!
