Happy Birthday, Judith Sargent Murray! Judith was born in Gloucester on May 1st, 1751. Although she spent the last years of her life living with her daughter Julia Maria in Mississippi, she spent the majortiy of her life living in the Middle Stree Neighborhood of Gloucester. Judith was the first American to discuss women's equality publicly when she publishd her famous essay, "On the Equaity of the Sexes" in 1791. She wrote a draft of that essay in her upstairs writing closet at her home at 49 Middle Street.

The Sargent House Museum will be opening at the end of May for the new museum season. Plan a visit and check out our website for more information on our upcoming summer Community Book Read and other events.
