Beginning this year, we proudly celebrate 100 years of Hammond Castle Museum. In 1926, construction first began on the Museum, marking the start of an extraordinary vision brought to life by inventor John Hays Hammond Jr.

Through the efforts of Director of Collections & Grants, Beth Welin's multi-year digitization project, we have been able to retrace the day-to-day progress of the Museum’s construction, uncovering remarkable details about its creation and evolution.

Save the Date for September 30th, when we will host a special lecture by Beth as we share the Museum’s origin story. This program will explore not only the chronological journey behind the construction of the Castle, but also the deeper purpose and vision that inspired the Museum.

This striking stained-glass panel depicting the Virgin Mary was designed by artist Natalie Hays Hammond, sister of Hammond Castle Museum’s founder, John Hays Hammond Jr. The piece was commissioned in 1930 from the renowned French stained-glass studio Atelier Jacques Simon and delivered to the Castle in early 1931, the same firm who made most of the stained glass windows for Hammond.

The bold outlines and simplified geometric forms reflect early 20th-century stained glass design, blending traditional religious imagery with the modern artistic style of the era.

This piece is one of many artworks within our collection that reflects the Hammond family’s passion for art, symbolism, and European craftsmanship.

Every room holds something unexpected.
