The Art of David Arsenault

The Art of David Arsenault The page of Gloucester MA American Realist oil painter David Arsenault. David Arsenault has been an oil painter for more than 20 years.

Light-filled, colorful art that captures ordinary moments in an extraordinary way. A visit to The Art of David Arsenault Gallery offers you a timeless interpretation of the Cape Ann experience. Colorful, peaceful scenes of Rockport, Gloucester, and more, along with unique perspectives on our world, leave you feeling at peace yet engaged and seeing in a different way when you return to the outdoors

. The next time you visit Rockport, step inside the gallery and meet David and his wife Sue, enjoy relaxing jazz music, and take your time viewing dozens of original oil paintings and numerous canvas giclée prints. Be sure to bring your own unique way of seeing—along with your love of Cape Ann. The Wall Street Journal once recognized his style for its similarity to Edward Hopper’s—who likewise painted on Cape Ann—by stating that “Some of Mr. Arsenault’s paintings could pass for works by Edward Hopper, just at a thousandth of the price.” Arsenault is known for his colorful and
dramatically-lit “frozen moment” scenes of Cape Ann and Cape Cod, along with road trips, neon signs and night, and landmarks like diners and drive-ins. His current work is exclusively made up of paintings depicting places in and around Cape Ann, focusing around Rockport and Gloucester.

While walking to breakfast in Wellfleet on Sunday morning, I passed the Second Empire/French Mansard-style house that inspired my 2008 painting "Cape Cod Bays." You may remember that painting became the cover art for Anne Tyler's 2025 novel, "Three Days in June." Always fun to see old friends, and the quick Cape trip was that, in part. It felt as if I was living in the present while feeling the past fully present.

It was outstanding to see so many art lovers turn out on such a cool, rainy, windy Saturday for the Opening Reception at Lille Gallery . There was lots of conversation, so I paused to take only a single photo—this one—showing some of my work. I caught the eye of Russ Schleipman, who took a moment's break from photographing the occasion. You can see a nice montage of his photos on Instagram . Many thanks to Corina Belle-Isle for her vision, energy, and geniality both that day and in all the behind-the-scenes things required in that role. After 10 years of running my own gallery, I understand—and appreciate!

Looking forward to seeing owner Corina Belle-Isle and meeting a number of colleagues. But, of course, I'm hoping to see YOU!

Sometimes I'm a mystery unto myself. Know the feeling? After a day alone in the studio, I chose to head into Rockport to see if I could connect with a friend or two or three. But I also felt the need for an extended walk, and so first followed a favorite route that Sue and I would often take when we lived in town: down Atlantic into the Headlands and on to Old Garden Road, the footpath, Marmion Way, and down South Street into town. By the time I made it downtown, all the galleries and shops were closed—everyone had gone home. Leo the cat is great, but his conversation skills can use a lot of work.

NEW!
“One Quiet Evening”
24” x 18” oil on canvas
There’s something insdescribably reassuring about seeing lit windows when out on an evening stroll. I equate it to a sense that “all is well” or that “calm lives there.” And as darkness begins to fall, the glowing rectangles may also represent islands of refuge from the night to come. It’s a feeling that I’ve had for as long as I can remember. There’s also curiosity about the lives being lived inside those walls and the way that homes reflect that life. But solving mysteries is a job for someone else. This artist only asks the questions, and invites you to walk along with me to discuss what we’ve seen and felt.

Excited to learn yesterday that "Classic Gas" (below) SOLD yesterday at the Lille Gallery—the day before the very first day of business! Gallery owner Corina Belle-Isle has been graciously entertaining art lovers who couldn't wait to see what's "in store" for them. Marion, the painting's new owner, will keep it in Brewster. So, a painting inspired by an Edward Hopper painting of Cape Cod ("Gas") traveled to a gallery on Cape Cod to ultimately live in a cottage on Cape Cod. Sounds perfect to me! Thanks, Corina and Marion!
