SkyLab Glass Arts was founded in 2016 by a group of young glass blowers that met while attending Anoka-Ramsey Community College majoring in their Fine Arts program with an emphasis in glass. As they progressed with their studies, they came to the realization that it was nearly impossible to make a living doing what they loved in an industry saturated with cheap product being produced by cheaper la
bor overseas. With the emergence of Borosilicate lampworking, the SkyLab crew decided to shift their focus away from the antiquated practice of soft glassblowing in order to concentrate their abilities on the art of hard glass. Working out of a cramped garage taking shifts on just two torches and sharing a few small kilns, the SkyLab crew has been honing their skills and shaping their craft into something they are now excited to share with the world. The SkyLab Glass Arts “Space Station” is in the final stages of completion. The physical location will be a studio with both monthly and hourly rental opportunities for local glass artists as well as individuals interested in the art of lampworking. There will be a large variety of materials on hand and for sale ranging from Schott clear tube and colored rod to Skutt Scarab kilns for annealing and fusing, Carlisle torches, Facetron faceting machines and tools to be utilized by local Twin Cities lampworkers and beadmakers in our space as well as yours. SkyLabGlassArts.com will be an online storefront to purchase the work developed in our Space Station. Please visit the “Artists” section of the website in order to view the available works created here. We appreciate your support, and hope to hear from you soon.
