in 1917, William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody was buried on Lookout Mountain, with an estimated 20,000 mourners in attendance to pay their respects to the legendary showman.

Even after his passing, Buffalo Bill and his final resting place have inspired art and artisans for over a century. A perfect example is this evocative 1924 painting by W.R. Lockhart, Buffalo Bill’s Grave by Moonlight – Lookout Mt.

Happy International Museum Day! 🤠🏛️ Did you know that the Buffalo Bill Museum was started by Cody’s foster son? In 1921, Johnny Baker—a star sharpshooter from the Wild West show—and his wife, Olive, partnered with the City and County of Denver to open the museum in Lookout Mountain Park. Pictured here is a rare look inside the original Pahaska building! The museum moved next door to its current location in 1977. Today, the museum welcomes over 80,000 visitors a year. Drop a 🤠 if you’ve ever made the trek up Lookout Mountain!

Starting today and going through Labor Day, admission to the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave is free for active duty military personnel and up to five of their immediate family members as part of the Blue Star Museums program!

How does it work? It's simple! Active duty personnel show their green Common Access Card at the front desk to receive the complimentary admissions.

Blue Star Museums is a collaboration between the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and museums across America to offer free admission to the nation’s active duty military personnel, including National Guard and Reserve, and their families each summer. Horseback riding was a central aspect of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show. Cody, along with many other performers, would ride on horseback while showcasing trick shots or acting in reimagined Western scenes. Buffalo Bill rode over twenty horses throughout his life, including Duke, who is pictured alongside the showman below.
