Josiah Leake
1730-1795
Buried at Rocky Spring, Goochland County, Virginia

Captain Josiah Leake has two markers in the Rocky Spring cemetery. The first and oldest lists his name, birthdate, three wives (all named Anne) and his son’s name, Samuel. The second (pictured here) commemorates his service in the Goochland County militia during the American Revolution.

The cemetery is just 50 yards southeast of the ruins of what was once the Leake family homestead. Family lore says the house was built in the late 1600s in what was then Henrico County. The cemetery is on private property and is not open to the public.

We are posting this picture to help celebrate Goochland’s involvement in the American Revolution. We hope to post more gravesites of Revolutionary War soldiers as we find them. Josiah is also listed as the builder of Woodlawn which still stands a few miles west of Centerville. The Leake family owned several mills, the ruins of one can be visited on a nature walk at Leake’s Mill Park.
