The fiddle was one of the first string instruments that colonizers brought with them on the Tennessee frontier. The fiddler would often travel from fort to fort, providing entertainment as they travel. When frontiersman gathered, the fiddler would play for everyone to dance the Jig and Reel. In 1975, the Goodlettsville American Revolution Bicentennial Commission chose as their project the restoration of the Bowen House. The last tenants left the home in 1960, and afterwards the home was used as a barn. By 1975, the home was in depleting condition.

Funding to restore the house was secured through federal and state grants, along with private donations. The Winn Brothers Engineering Company of Nashville was contracted to stabilize the structure. Their plan of stabilization included lifting the house from its foundation by using hydraulic jacks. Other problems that had to be addressed were the numerous cracks that spanned the brick walls, and that the inside of the home was beyond recognition.

In 1980, after several years of work, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places. That same year the Bowen House was opened for tours.

Take a tour of the Bowen House to see the original features of the home that were preserved and look at more before and after images.

If you think laundry is a time consuming chore now, imagine it on the Tennessee frontier! Each article of clothing would have to be handwashed with a washboard to scrub out the dirt, rinsed and wrung out by hand before it dried in the sunshine for hours or even days. Heritage Days attendees tried it out for themselves, and one piece of clothing took at least 20 minutes!
