The Sam Macchette Station was erected in 1854 on the Oregon Trail and was used as a Fur Trading Post & Ranch House. From 1860-1861 the station was used as a Pony Express Station. After the Pony Express ended, the station was used as an Overland Trail Stage Station, bunk house, storage house, and dwelling until 1931. Williams donated the station to the city of Gothenburg. The city had it moved from

its original site to Ehmen Park inside Gothenburg city limits. The station was dedicated to "All Pioneers Who Passed This Way, To Win and Hold the West." The first Pony Express Ride was on April 3rd, 1860, it began in St. Joseph, Missouri and ended in Sacramento, CA. This first trip took nine days and 23 hours, this was less than half the time of the fastest stages! President Lincoln's Inaugural Speech marks the record run. The speech was carried for 1,996 miles and took 7 days and 17 hours to reach it's destination. Only one man was killed and scalped by the Indians. Many man were killed by Indians, however, at the stations. Bannock, Piute & Shoshone would burn the stations and destroy property, frequently. Due to the completion of the Overland Telegraph, the Pony Express was discontinued after 16 months. The founders, Russell, Majors & Waddell lost $100,000 in the operation of the Pony Express.

Gothenburg is proud to celebrate a new addition to its rich history! 🐎

A life-sized bronze sculpture of a Pony Express rider has been installed in Ehmen Park Arboretum, honoring the brave riders who carried mail across the frontier in the 1860s. Created by Nebraska artist Linda Egle, the piece has been over 20 years in the making through incredible community support, donations, and local partnerships.

Located near the historic Pony Express Station Museum, this stunning sculpture joins another bronze in the park and serves as a lasting tribute to courage, determination, and the spirit of the American West.

📬 A Pony Express Memory, 60 Years in the Making 🐎

We recently received this touching message from a visitor, and it meant so much to us that we wanted to share it with you:

“I’ve always had an interest in the Pony Express since a family vacation as a little boy, 10 years old in 1964. Our family stopped in Gothenburg, Nebraska to visit the Pony Express Station. I purchased a Pony Express paperweight as a souvenir and have kept it in my room growing up, and in my home office as an adult. It has always been a cherished reminder of my visit to your museum 60 years ago.

I just thought it would be encouraging for you, your volunteers, and visitors to know the impact your museum had on a little boy.”

Rob recently visited the Pony Express Museum in St. Joseph, Missouri, which rekindled those fond memories—and he even shared a photo of the paperweight he’s treasured for six decades.

Stories like this are why we do what we do. ❤️
Thank you, Rob, for reminding us that history leaves a lasting impression.

If you have a memory or experience from your visit, we’d love to hear it! Feel free to reach out to us at [email protected]

🌸 A huge thank you to everyone who donated to the Miriam Zietlow Flower Fund! 🌸

Because of your generosity, we were able to fill the front of the Pony Express Station with beautiful flowers in her memory. We’ve placed a little sign in the garden as a tribute to Miriam and a reminder of the love she brought to our community.

Her spirit truly lives on in every bloom. 💐❤️
