Grafton's Lucy Daniels was an avid and outspoken suffragist. In 1917 she traveled to Washington and joined the protest as a Silent Sentinel.
Maybe not so "Silent"....

Grafton Voices are heard in many ways - last night it was pretty easy to hear the roars of excitement when the Grafton ball team won the championship back in 1957.
When in town, take a walk through the ball field ( just behind the Inn Grafton Inn Vermont ) . It's real quiet, but I bet you’ll “ hear “ the roars of the crowds.

"The cure for boredom is curiosity" (Dorothy Parker)

As winter closes in, join us at the Grafton History Museum on Sat. 12/21 at 3PM to take a peek into Grafton's own Cabinet of Curiosities.

Over the years, GHS has collected material objects that hint at the town's cultural character. An iron curlicue, an oversize wooden funnel, a wooden whatsit ... these objects tell a story, though the relevance and context is not always evident. As GHS launches its IDEA project *, help us fill in the stories and contribute your thoughts about how we collect local history.

WE ARE NOT CRANKY
But we want to say…Grafton’s Wendy Martin is the Vermont Humanities officer for this important work:

April 2 is International Children's Book Day, so we are sharing a current favorite in our early literacy training programs - "A Very Cranky Book" by Angela & Tony DiTerlizzi.

We use a lot of different books for our Never Too Early: Social-Emotional Development Through Children's Literature program, and A Very Cranky Book gets at the heart of something we all experience: we all have cranky days, especially little kids!

"We find the book helps invite discussion around what cranky feels like, why we might feel cranky... and most important, what can we do with all those cranky feelings?" says Literacy Programs Officer Wendy Martin. "Maybe we should just see what happens to the world's crankiest book when he tries to be as cranky as possible!"

The accomplishments of the Grafton’s Turner Hill project are deeply tied to efforts of the Vermont Partnership’s founder, Curtiss Reed, and his work on The Vermont African American Heritage Trail.
It’s a good time of year to recognize the work of Curtiss, and the ongoing efforts of The Partnership to speak up about consequential issues here in Vermont.

While Daisy Turner’s “voice” is loud and clear, Sally’s voice may well be Daisy’s equal in a much quieter way.

“With her growing family, Sally Turner’s work was never done...Just cooking for her brood, extended family, and the hired men would have been a full- time job….Daisy said her mother fed 25 people at most meals…(A) favorite dish was steamed brown bread cooked with raisins and apples…” ( Daisy Turner’s Kin, by Jane Beck, 2015).
