Marine Fighting Squadron 322 (VMF-322) was established on July 1, 1943, at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point flying the F4U Corsair. In the fall of that year they moved to Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina to continue their training. They moved again in January, 1944 to Marine Corps Air Station Ewa, Hawaii.
-
In October, 1944, the squadron became part of Marine Aircraft Group 33 (MAG-33) when they moved to Espiritu Santo. The squadron was part of the Battle of Okinawa and on April 3, 1945, over 150 of its members were killed when its lead support element was struck by a Kamikaze. They rebounded quickly and were able to fly their first combat mission on April 9, 1945. VMF-322 remained on Okinawa for the rest of the war as they made bombing runs over the Japanese mainland. Following the war, the squadron moved to Midway Island in November 1945 where they remained as part of Marine Aircraft Group 44 (MAG-44) until they were deactivated on November 30, 1949.

!North Dakota Veteran!: Pvt Keith Robert Leeson, Of Ardoch, ND
Born: September 20th 1919
Death: February 13th 2015
Keith Robert Leeson a North Dakota local born and World War 2 veteran There is not much on Keith but this uniform is special to me because he is so local to me only 25 minutes away. Keith is wearing on his uniform the rank of Pvt with two unit patches, United States Army Military District of Washington (patch on the right) and Alaskan Defense Command Patch (on the left) for the medals left on the uniform are the World War 2 Occupation Medal bar and a Good conduct Medal bar also included found in the pocket was unnamed good conduct ww2 medal, His uniform is complimented with a 5 bullion made overseas service bars which is counted as 2 years and 6 months overseas. Below that is a Service stripe of every 3 years in the service in Keith’s obituary it states he served a total of 4 years during WW2. And it is completed with a gold ruptured duck which signifies a honorable discharge.
-
2nd photo is of Keith himself wearing to believe this exact uniform with him in the future posed next to him still sharp as always!
-
If anyone had info about this man’s service. It would be much appreciated to fill in these service blanks thank you.

Note: This post is a repost of the original with more info, I bought this uniform a while back.

💜WIA: Guadalcanal Marine Uniform named to Frank Cotrufo💜
1st marine division 1st marine battalion “B” Company, (Guadalcanal)
Born: March 24th 1905
Death: May 30th 1983
He is talked about in the book “Guadalcanal Marine” as he is the 1st Sgt of the Marine James Rube Garret jr. whom wrote the book, in this book he quotes Frank directly talking about “To further complicate the matter the Wellington Dockworkers have gone on strike so you Marines will have to do the hoisting and hauling yourselves”. During the Guadalcanal battle in the book James recalls going on regular patrol with his platoon and coming back to direct hit on the “bivouac” with a Japanese Bomb and proclaimed several men wounded which then includes example that Marine company 1st Sgt Frank Cotrufo was wounded to the head and suffered concussion from the Japanese bomb he was wounded on September 12th 1942 and was given the Purple Heart for Wounded in action he would go on to fight the whole duration of Guadalcanal battle on the island and then later being stationed in his home town to work at a powder factory during the rest of wartime+ this would conclude the ending of his approximately 23 years in the marine corps from starting August 16th 1923…
