North Dakota Museum of Art

North Dakota Museum of Art A cultural jewel on the prairie featuring rotating regional, national, and international exhibitions and events. It collects the visual history of the region.

The North Dakota Museum of Art was founded in the mid-1970's as the University of North Dakota Art Galleries, a temporary exhibition space primarily for the benefit of university students. In 1981 the North Dakota State Legislature designated the University Galleries as North Dakota's official art museum. With its expanded mission came a new name: the North Dakota Museum of Art. The first task was

to find an appropriate and permanent home. A building fund, established in the late 1970s from private sources, had grown to $1 million. The staff and the Friends of the North Dakota Museum of Art, a non-profit organization established in 1985, raised an additional $400,000. The University of North Dakota agreed to give the Museum a 1907 gymnasium if the Friends raised the additional money needed for the renovation. In September 1989 the building, designed by Harvey Hoshour, an MIT graduate who worked for Mies van der Rohe before establishing his own firm in New Mexico, opened to great public enthusiasm. Artists participated by designing the public restrooms (neon artist, Cork Marcheschi), the gift shop and the donor wall (Barton Benes), and the sculpture garden (Richard Nonas). The North Dakota Museum of Art collects contemporary, international art in all media starting with the early 1970s (the founding of the Museum) onwards. It is also assembling a survey collection of contemporary Native American art, starting with the early 1970s when the movement emerged. This does not preclude the acceptance of collections that are outside this focus if they would enrich the visual life of our audience, i.e. a historical textile collection.

The North Dakota Museum of Art Museum would like to congratulate artists Adebunmi Gbadebo (1) and María Magdalena Compos-Pons (2) on their participation in the main exhibition at the 61st Venice Biennale which opens this week.

Selected by the late curator Koyo Kouoh, the work of these two artists will be featured in the exhibition titled “Minor Keys.” Reflecting on this theme, Kouoh writes: “[T]hough often lost in the anxious cacophony of the present chaos raging through the world, the music continues. The songs of those producing beauty in spite of tragedy, the tunes of the fugitives recovering from the ruins, the harmonies of those repairing wounds and worlds.”

Many Museum visitors had a chance to see Gbadebo and Compos-Pons’ works in the Museum’s recent exhibition “Icons, Archetypes, and Portraits” which featured works from the Permanent Collection (3-5). Long time Museum visitors might also recall that Compos-Pons had a spectacular solo exhibition at the Museum in 2002 introducing her work to North American viewers.
In July of this year, the Museum is honored to feature another work by Gbadebo (6) in the exhibition “Material Abstractions” opening in July this year.

Thank you to the Orchestra of Indigenous Instruments and New Technologies (Orquesta de Instrumentos Autóctonos y Nuevas Tecnologías de la UNTREF) for their breathtaking performance this weekend at the museum! Conducted by Alejandro Iglesias Rossi, the performers brought our gallery space to life in concert with the surrounding art work. It was a fantastic coda to our Concert in the Galleries 2025/26 season and we thank Jenny Tarlin, NDMOA’s Coordinator for Chamber Music Programs for all her dedication to the series. We also wish to thank the Greater Grand Forks Symphony Orchestra for their collaboration and bringing this fabulous orchestra to our region. Last but not least thanks also go to our sponsors and donors as well as to our dedicated audience members.

The Orchestra of Indigenous Instruments and New Technologies will perform the last concert of the season in the Myra Foundation Concerts in the Galleries series. Join us this Sunday at 2 pm as eight Argentine musicians perform on reconstructed instruments recreating the sounds of ancient rituals and cultures. This will be an experience of music unlike anything we have heard all season. Tickets are still available online at ndmoa.com or at the door.
