Salt Palace Museum

Salt Palace Museum The Salt Palace Museum in Grand Saline Texas is the only building in North America made of pure rock salt. Morton Salt does not longer allows tours in the mine.

In the center of Grand Saline, Texas sits the only building in North America made of pure rock salt...known as the Salt Palace Museum. Grand Saline is home of one of the largest, purest salt domes in the nation with a supply estimated to last twenty thousand years! Grand Saline is also the Texas home of the Morton Salt Company. Many visitors cannot resist a taste... just to prove the building mate

rial is truly made of salt. The original Salt Palace was built in 1936 as part of the State of Texas Centennial Celebration. The solid salt structure was patterned after the Alamo town but was eventually torn down due to deterioration. Then, in 1975 a group of citizens decided to initiate the annual Salt Festival, held the second weekend of June, and as a centerpiece, the Salt Palace was rebuilt at its present location. Built of solid salt rocks donated by Morton Salt, a salt mortar mixture was used to replicate the original salt house. In 1993 the tiny salt building was melting away and was replaced by the present building. Changes were made in the design which included an overhanging roof to help protect the salt exterior from weather. A museum board was formed in 1995 to operate the Salt Palace and create a museum for the city. The museum not only features the salt industry, which dates back to 1845, but also the rich history of Grand Saline and its citizens. Displays inside the Salt Palace include salt mining memorabilia and photographs. A video tape filmed in the Morton Salt mine shows mining operations at 750 feet underground.

City of Grand Saline – Friday Update

It has been a busy week here in the City of Grand Saline, with a lot of great work taking place across multiple departments.

We recently held a Town Hall meeting where we discussed current and future grant opportunities, public safety concerns, and ongoing challenges our departments are facing. These conversations are important as we continue planning for the future of our community.

Street improvements remain a priority, and we are hopeful to complete several street replacement's across town in the coming months.

The city pool is currently being prepared for the upcoming season. City Council will vote next month on operating hours and scheduling, after which we will begin booking parties. The pool will also be under new management, and we look forward to providing a great experience for our citizens this summer.

Mayor Kathy Smith has been actively meeting with various organizations and city personnel throughout the week.

A big shoutout to our Public Works Department for their continued efforts in addressing water leaks and sewer issues across the city. Additionally, contractors are still actively working in the Lakeside Drive area, replacing sewer lines to improve infrastructure.

Our library hosted a wonderful Easter egg hunt for the community, with a great turnout of kids. Emma Curry, our Salt Queen, made an appearance along with the Easter Bunny, helping make the event extra special.

The Fire Department held its regular Monday night training, focusing on communications as Van Zandt County agencies transition to the new digital radio system.

The Police Department remains busy keeping our community safe.

Be sure to visit the Salt Palace, where Salt Mine Tour raffle tickets are now available for purchase—don’t miss your chance to experience one of Grand Saline’s most unique attractions!

Our EDC, Main Street, and Communications teams continue working hard to keep the public informed and support economic growth. Main Street has several exciting initiatives underway, including the near completion of the Welcome to Main Street mural.

Thank you to all of our departments and community members for helping keep Grand Saline moving forward!

It’s the perfect weather for soup or chili!
Darrell & I love the chili! 😋 We adjust the heat by not adding 2 rotel, we use one rotel and one diced tomatoes. It’s a super quick yummy meal!
Thank me later! ❤️
