🇺🇲 WWII uncovered: ⚓81st Anniversary of Pearl Harbor: Pearl Harbor Survivor Arles Cole
Arles Cole joined the Navy at 17 under a special program that allowed him early entry. He was trained in navigation, and chose service aboard the battleship USS West Virginia.
During the December 7th attack on Pearl Harbor the West Virginia received multiple torpedo hits along the port side as well as bomb hits from aircraft overhead. The attack caused massive damage to the ship, but it did not capsize. West Virginia sank, coming to rest upright on the harbor floor.
One of the bombs that hit the West Virginia did not detonate. It created a hole through which Arles was able to crawl up to the top deck as his ship was sinking. After assisting in the rescue of other shipmates, he noticed the flag had fallen and he was able to raise it again on deck.
According to the Tulsa World News: "Arles Cole went on to serve on the USS Turkey (a minesweeper) and the destroyer USS Pritchett aboard which he would take part in Pacific battles including Okinawa in 1945. His last rank with the Navy was Quartermaster 1st Class."
"After the war, Arles returned to Oklahoma where he met and married Virginia Weaver. The couple had three children. They were married 68 years until Virginia's death in 2014. He worked for Southwestern Bell for 35 years and was active in his church and local community. One of his proudest achievements was, as a member of the Last Man’s Club, having a section of U.S. 169 renamed the Pearl Harbor Expressway.
“I was given a very special gift, to be able to stay alive,” Cole told the World once. He planned to “keep telling (the story)” as long as he was able, he added. - Tulsa World January 14, 2021.
Arles Enos Cole passed away on December 4, 2020 at the age of 96. He was the last Pearl Harbor Survivor in the Tulsa area. Arles lies in rest at Floral Haven Cemetery in Broken Arrow Oklahoma. Lest We Forget.
