East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation

East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation The East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation honors, preserves and celebrates the maritime history of the East End of Long Island

In Greenport, we operate the East End Seaport Museum on the waterfront with its maritime exhibits and collections. Our blacksmith conducts demonstrations of iron working with hands-on experiences for children at the Village Blacksmith Shop. Offshore - we own, operate, and maintain the historic Long Beach Bar (Bug) Lighthouse. Bug Light is the gateway to Greenport, Shelter Island, and Peconic Bay and we are proud to be the stewards of this working navigational structure.

Sailing has long been a sport of access, not opportunity.

That’s exactly what this conversation is here to change.

Join the East End Seaport Museum this Saturday at 5PM as Jeff Bresnahan, one of the most accomplished leaders in collegiate sailing, shares his work expanding access to the water through the Shelter Island New Horizons Initiative.

The masterminds behind this incredible initiative are creating real opportunities for people who have never had the chance to step on a boat, opening doors, building confidence, and changing lives through sailing.

Hosted by Stirling Harbor Foundation.

This is more than a talk.
It’s about the future of who gets to experience the water.

Beginning in 2026, stewardship of Greenport’s Maritime Festival will transition to the Greenport Business Owners Alliance, in partnership with Hold Fast, Stay True, the Greenport Village Business Improvement District, and the Village of Greenport.

This three-year collaboration ensures the festival remains vibrant, sustainable, and community-driven — while continuing to directly support the East End Seaport Museum & Marine Foundation through shared revenues and the annual Land & Sea Gala.

The Museum will remain actively involved through its signature waterfront traditions, including the Cardboard Boat Race, Snapper Contest, and Kayak Races, hallmark events that define fall on the Greenport waterfront.

We are grateful for the partnership and excited for what lies ahead. ⚓

Bug Light is officially on its way back.

The East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation has successfully raised $880,000 to fully fund Phase One: Rock & Dock of the multi-year restoration of Long Beach Bar Lighthouse, our beloved Bug Light.

This first phase stabilizes the lighthouse’s rockpile foundation and builds a brand-new dock and access ramp, laying the groundwork for Bug Light’s future as a vibrant, accessible, and protected landmark. Thanks to extraordinary early community support, those gifts unlocked major matching grants from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation and Empire State Development, turning vision into action.

Marine construction begins this March, led by expert coastal engineers, with completion expected by mid-June, just in time for summer lighthouse cruises.

Bug Light has guided mariners for generations, and now, because of this community, it will continue to educate, inspire, and shine for generations to come.

This is what happens when community commitment meets momentum.

And this is only the beginning.
Keep Bug Light Shining!

During the winter of 1942, Greenport’s harbor played a critical role in protecting the East Coast. This Christmas card from the US Coast Guard Anti-Submarine Patrol offers a rare glimpse of holiday spirit amid wartime service. Honoring those who stood watch and wishing you peaceful holidays and a happy new year from everyone at the EESM!

A Moment of Pause, A Promise for the Future

After much reflection and community input, the East End Seaport Museum & Marine Foundation has made the difficult decision to pause the 2026 Maritime Festival. While we know this event holds a special place in the hearts of many, this pause allows us to focus deeply on what anchors our mission — preserving maritime heritage, protecting our bays, and inspiring curiosity for generations to come.

In 2026, our energy will turn toward modernizing the museum, preserving Bug Lighthouse, and expanding educational and conservation initiatives that celebrate and safeguard our working waterfront.

This is not a goodbye — it’s a return to our roots. ⚓️
We’re charting a new course, one filled with year-round opportunities to connect, learn, and celebrate the maritime spirit that defines Greenport and the East End.

Thank you to our community, members, and supporters for helping us continue this journey — together, we’re steering toward a brighter, more sustainable future. 💙

Enjoy with us some of our memories from this years Maritime Festival.
