May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! Drop by the museum to see some new items from the Nguyen family on display.

Phung Nguyen came to North Carolina from Vietnam in 1973 to study at Duke University. His wife, Y, and two daughters joined him in 1975, catching one of the last transports before the fall of Saigon to North Vietnamese forces. The family moved to Greensboro in 1977, when Professor Nguyen took a post teaching political science at North Carolina A&T State University.

Explore some of the stories of the family’s experiences by looking at the tennis racket and blouse on display in and a handmade metal rice steamer in GHM100: Treasures. Legacies. Remix. On display now until spring 2027.

Join us at the museum on Thursday, June 4 at 6 pm for an evening of WWII history and personal reflections featuring authors Laura Bailey, Kaye Ackermann, and Reagan Steele. This special program focuses on the life of Vern N. Schmidt, a member of the Greatest Generation who recently passed away after 100 years well-lived. While Vern had every intention of joining us in Greensboro to share his stories firsthand, we gather now to honor his legacy and ensure his voice continues to be heard.

Hear the personal stories of service, sacrifice, and resilience that Vern entrusted to these authors as a firsthand witness to one of the most defining periods of the 20th century. Together, we will explore his remarkable journey and discover how this global history connects deeply with our Greensboro community.

A book signing and refreshments will follow the program.

This is a free program, but seats are limited. Register at https://buff.ly/Pk2CGKH

This program is sponsored by Tri-State Steel.

There are a lot of new things to see here at the museum this May, including two new displays guest curated by UNC Greensboro students. Today we are highlighting the first of these displays.

In honor of Jewish American Heritage Month, “From Generation to Generation” examines how community gatherings, traditional ceremonies, and life-cycle events have connected and shaped the Greensboro Jewish community. This display highlights objects loaned by Jewish families and community organizations. It is part of the 2025-2026 Capstone Project of UNCG Department of History Museum Studies master’s student Kennedy Gray and includes a digital map that highlights locations with strong historical ties to the Greensboro Jewish community. This display is on view in the lobby through May 31.
