Our mission is to educate the public and preserve the history of Hunt County, Texas.

Of particular emphasis is the impact of the cotton industry and the historical significance of our military heroes, especially Audie Murphy.

Join us on Saturday, June 20th from 10am-12pm at the Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum for 250th Kids Day. To help celebrate the country’s 250th anniversary we will have activity stations set up in the museum so kids can make crafts like a tricorn hat, visit learning stations and see some of the items that were used to help teach kids about colonial times and the founding of our country. A special thanks goes to Regent King’s Fort Chapter Inc., NSDAR and TISD for letting us borrow their America 250 traveling trunk program that helped us plan this day’s activities. Join us for a program on Tuesday, June 2nd at Noon at the Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum by Dr. Ken Bridges who will be talking about the homefront and the men and women who fought overseas during WWII who were from Texas. Dr. Bridges is a professor of history, geography and political science at South Arkansas College in El Dorado as well as an online instructor with Odessa College. He was born in Arlington and raised in Grand Prairie. He received a BA from the University of Texas at Austin and a MA and PhD in history from the University of North Texas in 2003. In addition, he received a second MA in Public Administration from Southern Arkansas University in 2023. Dr. Bridges has written 8 books and writes the History Minute column that appears in 98 newspapers in Arkansas and Texas and reaches more than 200,000 readers each week. Among his books are Tales of Old Texas, a collection of his Texas History columns. Admission to the program is free for museum members; otherwise there will be a $5 general admission fee.

Sorry to anyone that has been trying to reach us. The phones and internet at the museum went down earlier this afternoon and have not come back online. They are coming out to work on it friday afternoon. I'm not sure if it's related but they've been doing a lot of work on the water line nearby.

Join us on Tuesday, May 5th at Noon at the Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum for a program by Dr. Rebecca Rowe on "A Studio at War: Comfort, Duty and the Disney Touch." The presentation will focus on two different ways Disney was an important cultural impact on WWII: first, how Disney's media during this time period impacted the war effort; second, how soldiers during WWII used Disney media as a connection to each other and to home. Examining Disney's propaganda and edutainment for both the public and the military, Disney-inspired military insignia, the use of Donald Duck, and more, this presentation will ultimately explore why adults turn to children's media like Disney during our darkest hours.
Rebecca Rowe is Asst. Professor of Children's Literature in the Dept. of Literature and Languages at East Texas A&M University where she teaches about the complicated power dynamics surrounding literature and media for young audiences. She is also the founding editor of the International Journal of Disney Studies and has published 10 articles and 3 edited book chapters, with her first monograph, Adapting American Adulthood: From Children's Literature to Kidult Media, set to come out this October. Her research mostly examines how adaptations, both professional and fan-made, adapt identities due to cultural, media, and audience differences. As a detective you get to question the suspects as you try and figure out where the murder happened, who did it and what weapon was used. All participants who get all three right will go into a raffle drawing for a chance to win one of three prizes. Tickets cost $15 per person. Join us for Munzee at the Museum! Munzee is the next generation in global scavenger hunt games. Track down QR codes hidden in the real world and capture them for points. Whether you are a casual player, an avid explorer, or a hardcore competition enthusiast, Munzee helps you rediscover the world around you.
Everyone will have the unique opportunity to capture munzees on the museum grounds and inside the museum that will only be available during the event. During the event there will also be no charge to go through the museum for participants so it will be a great time to both play the game and visit the museum. Join us at the Audie Murphy American Cotton Museum for our Golden Oldies Movie Night! It is Saturday April 18th at 5pm. This month's movie is the 1943 western Cheyenne Roundup! As always admission is free as are popcorn and sodas, donations are always appreciated.
