The 6th Virginia was mostly raised in the colony’s Piedmont counties. It had three and perhaps even four rifle companies. It has not yet been determined whether Capt. Oliver Towles’ Spotsylvania company had rifles or muskets. The county was assigned one company of each. Capt. George Stubblefield of the 5th Virginia led the county’s other company. If you know which was which, speak up!

Hugh Mercer was initially denied a command because he was a “North Briton.” Then he was made colonel of the 3rd Virginia, raised largely in northern Virginia. This was the first regiment sent north to join Washington, debuting at Harlem Heights, where Maj. Andrew Lietch was killed. By then, Mercer was already a general.
