Grinnell Historical Museum

Grinnell Historical Museum Our mission is to tell the stories of Grinnell, Iowa, through artifacts and photographs.

On July 30th 1958, the Grinnell Historical Museum Society was created to study, collect, and preserve the history of Grinnell, Poweshiek County, and Iowa. Our non-profit organization was certified by the State of Iowa for the specific purpose of gathering objects of historical interest and importance to preserve them for cultural and educational purposes for present and future generations.

The Collections Committee has been working through a backlog of donated items and recently came across this photo of the Dixie Carmel Corn Shop. 🍿🎬 This little stand was located on the corner of Broad and 5th Ave and sold concessions to take into the nearby movie theater. The photo is undated.

Thank you to everyone who attended the opening of our new exhibit "Precision and Detail: The Artistry of Judy Martin!" It was a fun afternoon and we had a great turnout!

This stunning exhibit of beautiful and intricate quilts, as well as Judy's books and early quilting tools, will be on display until March 2027. Trust us, you won't want to miss this exhibit!

There are also a few of Judy's books for sale in the museum gift shop, some of them autographed.

Museum Hours:
Tuesday-Friday: 1-5 p.m.
Saturday: 12-4 p.m.

Museum Admission:
General: $10
Senior aged 65+: $8
Student/Veteran with valid ID: $8
Children 17 and under: Free (through 2026)

There's still plenty of time to sign up for Saturday's golf tournament at the Oakland Acres Golf Club! ⛳

Register from 8:00-9:00 am with a shotgun start at 9:00 am. A four person team costs $300 and includes lunch and golf cart rental. A silent auction will held in the clubhouse. You don't need to play in the tournament to bid on silent auction items.

Tomorrow from 1:00-4:00 pm is the exhibit opening for Precision and Detail: The Artistry of Judy Martin! Admission to this event is free.

The 33 quilts being displayed in our museum include her modern takes of the traditional Log Cabin and Lone Star Quilts. Judy Martin is the 2026 Quilters Hall of Fame inductee and local Grinnell quilt designer and author.

Mark your calendars, you won't want to miss this wonderful upcoming exhibit! The museum is thrilled to share that at the end of August, we will be displaying thirty-one extraordinary quilts designed by the talented Judy Martin, the 2026 Quilters Hall of Fame inductee and local Grinnell quilt designer and author.

Judy's ingenious creations include modern plays on Log Cabin and Lone Star Quilts, many of which will be included in the exhibit. Join us for the exhibit opening on August 30th from 1:00-4:00 pm. Admission to the opening will be free!
