Founded in 1894 to preserve and share the history of Groton. Office hours are Mondays and Thursdays. Boutwell.

The Groton Historical Society was incorporated in 1894 and since then has acquired artifacts, documents and historical memorabilia that are significant to the history and lives of the residents of Groton. In 1933 the Society received the generous gift of Governor George S. Boutwell’s home from the estate of his daughter and founding member of the Historical Society, Georgianna A. This gift has allowed the Groton Historical Society to display and house the collections that it has acquired. In addition to serving the community as a museum, the Groton Historical Society actively publishes books and pamphlets and works with other organizations in town to promote Groton’s history. It also publishes a quarterly newsletter for members, holds quarterly historical programs which are open to the public and cover a wide range of topics relating to Groton’s history. The society provides assistance to genealogical researchers and offers educational tours of the Boutwell House.

Boutwell House turned 175 this year! Come by and see us on Sunday (Oct 25) at 2:00 to hear a history of the house after our brief annual business meeting. Free and open to the public.

In 1894 Charles B. Brooks presented the Groton Historical Society with seven weather journals kept by his grandfather Caleb Butler (1776-1854). Butler arrived in Groton in 1802 and spent the remainder of his life holding such town positions as postmaster, selectman, surveyor, historian, and pound keeper. From that year- 1802-until his death in 1854 Butler recorded weather observations from his home on Main Street.

A visit to Groton’s Old Burying Ground in Groton, where centuries-old headstones preserve the names and stories of the town’s early residents. Weathered inscriptions, fading dates, and intricate carvings offer a glimpse into how earlier generations lived, mourned, and remembered their dead. These graves are more than memorials; they’re pieces of local history slowly being reclaimed by time.

Since its officially spooky season we thought it would be a good time to show you the Hearse in our collection. Bought by the town in 1900, the hearse was in commission until 1936. Starting in the late 18th century, burials and funerals in Groton were a town-run service. They were simple and overseen by the undertaker until the mid 20th century, when privatised funeral homes and more elaborate burial services came into fashion.
