Need to clean out the garage to make room for all dad's new Father's Day goodies? Come and see us at the Clarke County Museum on June 20th!

We are merging our community work day with an end-of-spring fundraising event. Say hello to SUMMER as volunteers from the museum help us clean up at the Armistead-Stallard house next door. Whether you have household yard sale items or your own small business this is the perfect opportunity to pick up any last-minute gifts for dad, sell your own, or just come and shop the community with us. Please use the link provided to sign up and secure your spot for the event! Spaces are $25 for the day and if you would like to add a table, please let us know!

The Clarke County Historical Society would like to thank Mr. Michael Martin, or should we say BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, for joining us for our May society meeting! This program was very informative and creative, and kept with our theme of America 250 so well. Thank you again to Ben Franklin for teaching us how history connects and the events that had to occur for us to be the country we are today!

What better way to kick off a new month than to come see the new exhibit at the Clarke County Museum! This exhibit displays some of the artwork of Mrs. Myrtle Brake Moore (1878-1972) and tells a little about her life. She spent many years in Clarke County living with her daughter, Julia Helms, who lived in the Helms House next door to the museum building! Anyone who enjoys art will surely appreciate her evolving style of sketching and painting, as well as the few painted ceramics that we have. While you’re visiting, head on upstairs to see the reworked War Room!

Join us on Sunday, May 31st at Grove Hill Town Hall at 2:30pm for a presentation by David Martin Jr. as he shares the history of colonial America in the persona of Benjamin Franklin! David is an award-winning high school history teacher known for his historical impressions and interactive presentations, so please come and enjoy hearing from a time-travelling Founding Father!

This past Sunday the Clarke County Historical Society was delighted with a presentation by our very own President Marcus Gordon. His program “The Revolutionary War in the American South” provided some insightful information on the condition of the south before, during, and after the war. From the Regulators, to the Liberty Boys, the Scots-Irish, and the Huguenots, we learned a lot about how the south fought back. Something interesting to note is the Ellicott Stone located in Axis, AL. This stone once marked the line between Spanish and U.S. territory.

Saturday’s Community Work Day was a success! I would like to thank everyone who came out and participated. Your support to the museum is greatly needed and appreciated. Despite the drizzly weather we managed to clean up, rearrange, organize, AND eat a few donuts 🍩 in the process! Thanks again for all the help, and we would like to have more work days in the future so stay tuned.

We invite the public to join us this coming Sunday the 26th at 2:30pm at Grove Hill Town Hall for our monthly Historical Society meeting. Society President Marcus Gordon will present the program titled The Revolutionary War in the South! We are looking forward to finding out some more information on how we were involved in the war. Everyone is welcome to attend!
