IT'S NOT ALL FUN AND GAMES!
On Sunday, May 3, STCHS had another of its volunteer "Work Days" at the Cobden Wells Fargo buildings in Big Oak Flat. The weeds around the buildings were showing just how much they enjoyed the winter rains and recent warm weather. A small group of dedicated volunteers whacked them back to a manageable height (all the while preserving a nice stand of California poppies.) Thanks to them for a job well done (but not 100% complete just yet)!

Schedule Update: No Speaker this week
For everyone looking to attend the STCHS monthly Speakers Series presentation this Friday (first Friday of the month), you now have an "opening" for something else for Friday, May 1. Due to scheduling challenges, we won't have a presentation this month. Instead, go out for that long-overdue fancy dinner in town. Or stay at home for that Netflix movie you've been angling to watch for a while. Or maybe take a sunset walk for some exercise.
We've got a good one slated for June, however, with presenters from Yosemite Park. Be sure to join us for that!

COME SEE THE LATEST AT THE MUSEUM!
The Museum has just unveiled its newest exhibit: "Water - Precious as Gold." The display tells the story of the 175-year effort to provide plentiful, reliable water to Groveland and Big Oak Flat. Starting with the Gold Rush mining era, the people of our area have worked to overcome the challenges of 6 months of scarce water. The exhibit chronicles the human ingenuity needed to overcome Nature's challenge - from the "Big Gap Flume" to the "inverted siphon" to Hetch Hetchy tunnels. Come to the Museum to learn about our history as well as our continuing challenge for the future. Special thanks to Kathy Brown, our displays coordinator, for her dedication to realize this addition to our Museum.

A UNIQUE LOOK AT MOTHERLODE MINES
An audience of 70 Grovelanders were fascinated and thoroughly entertained at the STCHS Speakers program on Friday, April 3. Max Wheeler - joined by his friend Nick Jones - gave a once-in-a-life time glimpse into the Gold Rush tunnels and mine under Sonora. Max explores the vast system of underground passageways from the mining days and presented a number of unique photos and videos from those explorations. It was truly an eye-opening and mind-blowing adventure to see. Max's book on his exploits is coming out shortly. Be sure to check it out! Our sincere thanks to Max and Nick for sharing their underground world.

DIG INTO HISTORY, GROVELAND!
STCHS is pleased to sponsor Maxx Wheeler as its next presenter in the STCHS Speaker Series on Friday, April 3 at 7 p.m. at the Resilience Center. Maxx is a well-known adventurer of the underground world in the Motherlode - meaning the mine shafts, tunnels, and other subterranean passageways beneath our feet. A prolific participant in social media and YouTube, he will discuss his new book profiling his explorations. Don't miss it. It should be a "deep" experience for all of us. (Sorry.)

GREAT PHOTOS, GREAT TALK
Over 75 Groveland residents and friends gathered at the Resilience Center on Friday night to hear local wildlife photographer Robb Hirsch discuss his work as part of STCHS Speaker Series.
