Today Motts Military Museum Inc. hosted the promotion ceremony for Capt. Sophia Pyle being promoted to Major. She is with the US Army ROTC Cadre at Ohio University in Athens and her family pined Major gold Leaf’s on her. The commissioning ceremony was performed by Lt. Col. Troy Lovely Prof. of Military History at OU, and the flag ceremony was performed by Maj. Wilt and Sgt 1st class Richardson Cadre at OU. We are proud of this young Lady; she is a delight.

On this day (D-Day) in the wee hours of June 6, 1944, Sgt. Don Jakeway Jumped into France as a member of Company H, 508th Regiment, 82nd Airborne Div. and was in heavy combat in Normandy. Later Don Jumped into Holland in Operation Market Garden and then fought in the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge) in WWII. Although severely wounded several times he survived. He was a great friend and Warren went with him to Normandy for the 70th anniversary. Pictured here under the tree he landed in on D-Day. We have a great exhibit with his items on display at the Museum. Don passed away in 2019 but lets us never forget the great sacrifice he made for us.

Lori and Warren were honored to celebrate Lee Dauer's 100th Birthday. Lee is a longtime member of the Museum.
Lee Joined the US Navy Sept. 22, 1944, and served on board the USS Henrico, as a Fireman 1st Class. Lee fought in the battle to retake the Philippines in February 1944 then in the invasion of Okinawa. On 2 April, his ship was attacked by a fast Yokosuka P1Y "Frances" attack bomber, configured as a kamikaze. The Henrico brought her guns to bear, the su***de bomber crashed into the bridge on the starboard side, her bombs exploding below. The ship lost power, and Lee and his fire parties soon brought the fire under control. 49 officers and men were killed in the attack, including Henrico's, Capt. William France, USN; her embarked Div. and two troop commanders; Her Executive Officer took command and brought the ship under control. God Bless Lee one of “The Greatest Generation” Happy Birthday!

On Memorial Day the Museum was very busy. We were in the Worthington Parade and the Groveport Parade. Lori was in Groveport’s Red, White and Run 5k race – where all processes benefited Motts Military Museum. She was running to remember SFC Rafael Diaz. She was wearing Warren's original uniform. Also running were our members, Isaac England and Mike Motts. Ed Reeves and Lori set up a tent and an exhibit with Ed and Latasha Glover there to answer questions. The ceremony after the parade in the Groveport cemetery was very moving. They also recognized the hometown banners; the Museum had put in Fred Mick (Groveport Graduate) the last Green Beret killed in Vietnam. Thanks to all our volunteers that made this happen.

In observation of Memorial Day, the Museum will be open on Memorial Day, Monday May 25th 2026 from 9 AM to 5 PM. There will be no admission charge. Please take a moment to remember all those who have given their lives so that we may remain free.

Mack & Jacqueline Fountain and their family visited the Museum yesterday to celebrate Mack’s 79th Birthday which is today. Mack was diagnosed with cancer and is now cancer free. Mack was in the 562nd Quartermaster Company attached to or in support of the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. So proud of Mack another one of our great veteran friends. Happy Birthday Mack!!
