The Air Pollution Control Control District Clean Air Rooms program is currently open and providing free air purifiers to Guadalupe residents. Our friends from APCD want to share this incredible program with our community! Below is some information about why this program is important and how to get involved!
Air purifiers significantly improve indoor air quality during wildfires and can be especially helpful for children, seniors, and people who have breathing challenges.
To participate, Guadalupe residents can fill out a quick online form and will need to provide some sort of proof of address of living in Guadalupe – such as a picture of your driver’s license, utility bill, or other mail, etc.
After you provide proof of address, the air purifier will be shipped, for free, directly to your address in about one month.
A link to that online application form is available on the Air Pollution Control District’s website: www.OurAir.org.
The Air Pollution Control District has staff who speak English and Spanish who can help answer any questions: 805-979-8050.
The Air Pollution Control District encourages people to participate – quantities are limited and the program is first-come, first-served. Only one air purifier per address is allowed.

If you’ve been a friend of the Dunes Center for a while, you know how much we love Point Sal. This magical area is rich ecologically and historically, carrying many of our region’s most formative stories. When we heard there was a chance to protect this area, we knew we had to be part of this cause.

The Dunes Center is advocating for the protection of Point Sal via a State Marine Conservation Area. Point Sal being a rather remote area provides an opportunity to enhance protection of:
🌱thriving seabird and marine mammal communities
🌿important area for baby fish and invertebrates
🍃Indigenous cultural resources.

The proposed regulations would allow non-extractive activities in the 9.18 sq mile boundary, including swimming, snorkeling, boating, and surfing. The MPA would prohibit take, damage, injury, or possession of any living, geologic, or cultural marine resource. Recreational fishing with hook and line from the shore would still be allowed.

By adding Point Sal to the state’s MPA network, Central California’s coast will benefit from increased habitat connectivity, representation, and replication – all key to increasing biodiversity in our waters.
Safeguarding this unique and relatively undisturbed area now will help bolster ocean health and promote climate resilience into the future.

To learn more about this MPA Proposal and what the Dunes Center is doing to advocate for it, join us on a community hike Saturday February 28th at 9am! Link to register is in our bio! Can’t make the hike but still want to support? Sign the public petition in our bio!

Did you know about the Dunes Center’s Hike Club program?

Every Wednesday, we head to a hiking location within South San Luis Obispo and North Santa Barabara counties with our students from Guadalupe. Many of these students also participate in our environmental science classes, which allows them to experience the subjects we discuss while on these trips!

It may be seeing a Brown Pelican we learned about at Rancho Guadalupe, or seeing the impacts of rain and flooding on the Santa Maria River, these students are always making meaningful connections about the land.

Your membership allows us to continue to bring these students to the natural spaces around them and experience their beauty and wonder. All the funds raised in our membership drive directly contributes to the quality of these outdoor experiences and in-class lessons. By becoming a Dunes Center member, you are fueling the next generation of land stewards and advocates of our natural spaces. Learn more about how to join to win by visiting the link in our bio!

Point Sal is part of the ancestral territory of the Chumash people and holds great historical and cultural significance. The Point Sal State Marine Conservation Area (SMCA) proposal is co-sponsored by the Northern Chumash Tribal Council and seeks to enhance Tribal co-stewardship. The Dunes Center is working in collaboration with the Natural Resource Defense Council as well as the Northern Chumash Tribal Council to advocate for the designation of Point Sal as a State Marine Conservation Area! Below are some facts that we will explore further on our hike:

🐟Designating this MPA would honor and strengthen Chumash stewardship of their ancestral waters, and elevate historical and present-day Chumash connections to the region.
🐠Point Sal is exceptionally rich ecologically, supporting diverse ocean wildlife and habitats—including kelp beds, rocky reefs, tidepools, sandy beaches, a migratory whale corridor, a critical larval retention zone, and a seabird and sea lion rookery.
🐙Point Sal is an important area for baby fish and invertebrates in their earliest phase of life. Protecting it would help maintain these populations and boost ecosystem health.
🌅Because Point Sal is remote and accessible only by trail, it remains relatively pristine and healthy. Safeguarding areas like Point Sal is increasingly important amid warming waters, shifting ocean conditions, and expanding uses such as aquaculture, offshore wind, and continued oil and gas activity
🐳By adding Point Sal to the state’s MPA network, Central California’s coast will benefit from increased habitat connectivity, representation, and replication – all key to increasing biodiversity in our waters.

Public access to Point Sal SB is available via Brown Road. No civilian access is available through Vandenberg Space Force Base. Motor vehicle access, bicycle access, and camping are not permitted. Access is from sunrise to sunset for recreational purposes only.

Please arrive 10-15 minutes early to get ready for this scenic adventure, link to register is in our bio!

Don’t miss out on the stunning views and nature insights. See you on the trail!
