On April 22nd, 1889, the first Land Run of what is now the state of Oklahoma took place. Attracting individuals from many places and many backgrounds, 1.9 million acres of land were opened to settlement by non-native peoples. This area of land, known as the "Unassigned Lands," was ceded to the U.S Government by the Five Tribes after the Confederacy lost the Civil War. The land became part of the public domain after remaining vacant until 1889.
