Hagerstown Museum & Arts Place

Hagerstown Museum & Arts Place This page is now a photo archive for what was the Hagerstown Arts Place artists' group. No admission charge.

The Hagerstown Museum and Arts Place is a community museum and art gallery. The museum pays tribute to Nettle Creek area history and commercial development, paying particular attention to the Perfect Circle Corporation's importance to the auto industry. Hagerstown is about 60 miles east of Indianapolis, 10 miles west of Richmond.

A reminder that I keep this page open as a photo archive only. It has had no official association with the Hagerstown Museum since Arts Place turned off the lights in 2013. I will be happy to answer any questions you may have, insofar as I can, and encourage your interest in the Historic Hagerstown Museum FB page, and the deep and fascinating history of this area. Nice to see that Ralph Teetor is attracting interest, possibly as the father of the self-driving car (as the Smithsonian described it to me in 2012).

Meet and greet the artists today,as we close the Hagerstown Arts Place gallery. Art sale and wine sampling from 1-6 PM. Come in and shoot the breeze about art, enjoy a glass of Easley and bit of cheese, and see if there's a painting or two you must have. Ace volunteer, painter and photographer Jerry Cox (pictured) from New Castle will be there, along with instructors Bess Sturgis and Anita Crull and Tom Butters, plus dropin Arts Place artists like Lisa Pfenninger, Jean McCauley, Stella Witte and others. Prices for paintings, framed and unframed, are open for discussion.

Saturday's painting classes have ended, but Arts Place will be open for an auf wiedersehen celebration on January 28th. Come meet some of the artists and make deals on original art. The gallery closing means we have paintings that need to find new homes. A free Fly In poster with any purchase. And we'll have some complimentary Easley wines to help you with your aesthetic decisions. Hagerstown Arts Place is open from 1-6 on this last day.

Tempus fugit.
Only one more free painting session at Hagerstown Arts Place. Saturday, Jan 21 from 2-6 PM. Just bring yourself. And maybe cookies. On the 28th we'll be clearing out the gallery space, which will be eventually occupied by Hagerstown Museum displays. And on the 28th we'll also be saying goodby with some Easley wine, so feel free to stop by and have a glass. You could probably make some good deals on original paintings that we don't want to take home. Open from 1-6 on that last day, or whenever the wine runs out. (Thank you daughter Meredith Butters Easley and the Easley Winery, for your great generosity and donations to the Hagerstown Museum and Arts Place events through the 8 years we've been here. Reggae rocks!)

I am chumming the water to see if any of our local folks want to participate in several art lessons on drawing/painting cars. These would be 2 hour session on successive Thursday evenings from 6-8 PM. Instruction would be free and we would provide basic materials to get you started with acrylics. Message me here if interested.

Time off.
Violin classes resume on January 11, kids art classes on January 12 from 4-5, adult painting classes on January 14 from 2-6. It's all free and promptness will be rewarded.

The Museum is closed for the winter and will reopen in March. Arts Place hours are 2-6 beginning January 4. Visit the art, talk about art, read about art, and get tuned up for free instruction resuming January 11 for violin from Anita Crull; January 12 for kids and drawing from Bess Sturgis; and January 14 for painting, from Tom Butters. And check back here for our Visiting Artist series, beginning in March with free drawing lessons from nationally-published illustrator Jim Balkovek!

Tonight's musical show, "Christmas Through The Ages" on the Opera House stage is cancelled due to weather. Tickets will be converted to Sunday's performance, which will go on as scheduled.
