This day in history - On May 29, 1910, Glenn H. Curtiss made his famous flight from Albany to NYC in his aptly named "Albany Flyer." Today, we welcomed New York Times reporter Jesse McKinley, who is collecting background for a story for the 175th anniversary of The New York Times ... The paper covered the first-of-its-kind long-distance flight in at least four editions, one of which ran a six page story. This day in history, 118 years ago, was the first flight of the AEA White Wing in 1908.

Designed by Frederick "Casey" Baldwin and with an engine designed by Glenn Curtiss, it was possibly the first example of tricycle landing gear on an airplane, a feature now common on aircraft today.

White Wing's controls were also remarkably modern, featuring a rudder, elevator, and ailerons. These 3 control surfaces are ubiquitous in modern aircraft.

White Wing's combination of conventional control surfaces and tricycle landing gear make it one of the most modern looking planes of aviation's pioneer era.

White Wing's first flight would be piloted by Baldwin on the 18th of May. The next day, Lt. Thomas Selfridge would fly, becoming the first airplane pilot in the US military. On the 21st, Curtiss's birthday, Glenn would make a flight of over 1000 feet. Two days later on the 23rd, White Wing would make its last flight, crashing with J.A.D. McCurdy at its controls.
