🚂 Museum Monday: Did you know?🚂

Have you ever wondered why Harlingen is here?

The answer is the railroad.

When founder Lon C. Hill helped bring the railroad to the area in the early 1900s, it transformed a small settlement into a growing hub of agriculture, commerce, and opportunity. Farmers could ship their crops across the country, businesses opened, and new residents arrived to build a future in the Rio Grande Valley.

Harlingen grew so quickly around the railroad that it earned the nickname "Six-Shooter Junction." Legend has it that passengers arriving by train could often hear gunfire in the distance. Fortunately, it was usually target practice rather than trouble, but the sounds of shooting gave visitors the impression they had arrived in a true Wild West town!

Today, the trains may not define daily life as they once did, but their impact can still be seen throughout our community.

🚂 Sometimes, all it takes is a train stop to change history.

Historic preservation is always important, but projects like these remind us just how much fun preserving history can be!

A special thank you to Ms. Eileen Mattei for sharing her knowledge, expertise, and passion with us. Today, she taught our team the art of restoring historic markers, helping ensure that these important pieces of our community's story can continue to educate and inspire future generations.

Thank you, Ms. Eileen, for helping us preserve the past, one marker at a time!
