It was a great day at the mill today. The siding on the south end was put on with lots of help. We will have 2 windows to watch the river from inside the mill. Thank you everyone who helped including Chris Bilodeau, Roy Clark, Isaac Seigle, Achille Belanger , Ed Somers and Merrill Rollins.

Please join our event. We are a turn-of-the-20th-century historic site and we are looking for talented, passionate artisans to join us for upcoming Scribner Mills events!

Our first event will be held on June 13th from 1:00 PM–4:00 PM.

We invite artisans who create handmade goods reflective of the late 1800s and early 1900s, as well as those who can demonstrate traditional skills and crafts connected to the logging industry. This is a wonderful opportunity to share your talents, engage with visitors, and help bring local history to life.

We can provide space in our field for you to set up your table and tarp during the event.

If you are interested in participating or would like more information, please send us a message so we know you are coming— we would love to hear from you!

SMPI is extremely grateful to receive a matching grant from 1772 Foundation and Maine Preservation to replace deteriorated shingles on the north side of the barn. Come visit us this summer where you can observe wooden shingles being made that will be used to preserve our buildings.

We are now in the middle of May, and the mornings are still chilly in the Scribners Mill Valley. Our volunteers are hard at work preparing for our first event of the season on June 13th from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

If you are interested in helping restore the old mill and can volunteer a few hours of your time, please contact us. As with any historic building, restoration is an ongoing work in progress.

This opening event will focus on the homestead. The house will be open for guided walk-throughs, where visitors can learn about daily family life in the Scribner home.

Since Saturday was traditionally baking day at the homestead, the kitchen stove will be filled with the aromas of fresh biscuits, baked beans, and molasses cookies. Visitors can enjoy freshly churned butter with the biscuits, along with honey and jelly.

Saturday was also the day the family prepared for Sunday services. Suits would be pressed, dresses ironed, and shoes polished in anticipation of the next day.

The mill itself remains in the restoration process as we continue working to restore the sash saw. In the mill area, machinery will be humming as members of the Scribner family demonstrate shingle sawing and share stories about the important role shingles played in the operation of the mill.

If your family worked with, or had a connection to, the Scribner family, we would love to hear and preserve those memories.

🚨We need your help! Reach out to the Committee on Appropriations & Financial Affairs and Senate & House leadership and ask them to fund critical improvements to the already successful Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit (HRTC) program.

➡ L.D. 435 will improve the existing credit so that it works for smaller commercial buildings in our villages, towns, and cities and create a homeowner tax credit. The result would be an HRTC program primed to help create more housing, revitalize the historic cores of our communities, and support the upkeep and weatherization of historic homes.

🗣Tell them that the fiscal note for L.D. 435 is negligible, but its impact is immeasurable. New construction of a single unit of affordable housing costs $500,000, while the cost of making these improvements to the HRTC does not exceed $1M until FY 2029-30.

🗣 Tell them that L.D. 435 has widespread support from Kennebunk to Presque Isle. More than 40 statewide, regional, and local non-profit organizations; municipalities; and individuals have provided letters of support.

History doesn't preserve itself. Support the legislation that will. 🏛

So thankful for the crew that showed up to work on the sill replacement at the mill. This is a project that we planned a long time for. Thank you Ed Somers for your skill and coordination of the project. Thank you to Isaac Segull, Greg Plummer and Peter Hammond for all of your help today. A huge thanks to Henry Hudson who took time out of his busy schedule to help lift the beams into place. We couldn’t have done it without you all.
