in 1638, Thomas Ho**er delivered a sermon in Hartford that included the now-famous words, “the foundation of authority is laid firstly in the free consent of people.”

The quote, displayed above the entrance to “Framing American Democracy: Radical Roots,” continues to echo through conversations about democracy, liberty, and the power of collective voice nearly 400 years later.

“Framing American Democracy: Radical Roots” on view through September 27. Learn more and plan your visit at TheWadsworth.org.

“The separate but cryptically interlocking ‘Framing American Democracy’ exhibits demonstrate how The Wadsworth not only grew with the country but retains that knack for attitude and expression that defined this invaluable museum 180 years later.”

Thank you to the "Hartford Courant" for featuring “Framing American Democracy.” Explore the exhibition series throughout the museum, on view through September 27, 2026.

In the center of “Weaving Images of Healing: Prayers, Waters, and Textiles” is a medicinal bed woven using chañuntuko, a traditional Mapuche technique, by artist Loreto Millalen. Suspended above the bed are threads of prayers and gratitude, creating a space anchored around healing, memory, and care.

On view through May 31, “Weaving Images of Healing” explores how contemporary Indigenous artists use art as a form of healing. Through weaving, video, and textiles, this installation reflects on the lasting impacts of colonialism while creating space for memory, care, and connection between people, land, and ancestors.
