We couldn't find a Halloween photo so this is the best we can do. It does feature carved pumpkins and a rather ghostly child. It shows F.C.Burk and family. Frank ran a steam sawmill by his house on W**d Rd which seems to be where this photo was taken in 1905. The property in the top right looks like the Spear Farm. Eventually the W**d Rd property became too large for Frank and so he traded it with Myrta Crandall and her sons for their property on County Rd. Myrta had bought the County Rd property following her husband's death with his life insurance payout.

This week's photo comes courtesy of Woodstock History Center. The view is of Hartland though. Taken around 1930 it shows the junction of Rt 12 and Rt 4. The gravel pit in the center of the photo became Britton's Lumber. The three figures are Fred, Floyd and George Dupuis. The Woodstock railroad is just visible on the far left.

This week's photo shows the Gardner Marcy House which used to stand at the junction of W**d Rd and Brownsville Rd. Considered to have been the most architecturally significant house in Hartland, it was built by Gardner Marcy. It was later used as an inn by visitors who came to take the waters at the mineral spring by the "Spring House" of John Field. (That house is the ruin on the opposite side of Brownsville Rd). The Marcy house also served as a meeting house for Spiritualists, a religious group which used seances to try and make contact with the spirit world.

The week's photo was taken October 3rd 1900 at the orchard on the Goodwin Farm (potential site of Sunnymede farm shop). The gentleman in the center is Homer Ruggles, cousin of our glass slide photographer, Byron P Ruggles. According to newspaper reports at the time "the two cousins had not met for 35 years. They are about the same age but Homer is best looking." Homer had travelled from Pittston, Pennsylvania for the visit.

This week's photo is a postcard showing Herb Ogden's mill on Jenneville Rd. He purchased the Marcy farm in 1938. The mill was built in 1916 and was originally situated by the Lull Brook gorge south of Mike's. Around 1947 Ogden moved the mill to his farm. There he pressed apples for c***r, vinegar and hard c***r, and ground cornmeal, wheat flour, rye and buckwheat. At its peak the mill produced 10,000 gallons a year.

HHS is always looking for old pictures of Hartland. If that old album is stored in your closet from your grandmother and great grandparents we would love to look at it and scan some. Especially the outer areas. We have very few of North Hartland homes.
If there are people in the photos they need to be labeled.

This week's photo was taken in 1911. It shows Brownsville Rd heading towards Four Corners. The property, generally referred to as the "Audrey Collins place" still stand although sadly the elm trees have long gone.
