Robin's Nest Art Studio

Robin's Nest Art Studio We sell Fine Art Cards and Prints. Make someone's day and send them a card, because sometimes we deserve better than a text. The rest is history.

After 25 years of teaching art I turned my energy to my own art making. The first card I had Alpha Graphics print for me was from a driftwood painting of a sailboat in Pleasant Bay. My intention was to use it for my own personal notecards. When friends got the card they loved it so much they wanted to know if they could order some. I mentioned my venture to my friend at the Concord Bookstore and he became my first official store.

Yesterday was a day of constant changes. I woke to an ice cream sherbet sky. the rainbow colored clouds sat low in the mountains. It was warm, and for the first time I could hear the faintest tapping of a woodpecker. This is the quietest place I have ever lived, and I drank in the silence like nectar. We are high up on a mountain road. the elevation is 1521. Birds don’t make it to this elevation in the winter and I miss them. They are my friends and delight. Like seeing fireflies in the night sky, they just make me happy. In the afternoon, we headed to Lake Willoughby for an adventure with the pups. We drove straight into the dreaded rain that had been predicted for days. The eternal optimist in me refused to believe it would rain, but rain it did… Actually, it poured. Paul groused while I silently hummed, la, la, la, la and we hiked on. When we got back to Burke, mother nature regaled us with this. I watched, breathless as the magic unfolded. The brilliant words of my favorite poet, Mary Oliver, playing in my mind. “Standstill and be astonished “ Nature ,Oliver,

Just found this in a pile of collage papers and postcards from the past. It’s always fun to be surprised by a little gem of musings.

We have not seen the sun for 10 days. Well, that’s not true. It peaked out yesterday for about 20 minutes in the afternoon. Vermont is known for its stretches of sunless days. People joke about it. I am pleased, even proud of myself that is not getting me down. For years and years I dreaded November. The month I associated with loss; both my beloved parents died in November. The bare trees, the brown leaves everywhere, and the wind. Why did it always feel so windy in November? Wind that rattled my soul and psyche. Then, one day, I’m not sure how, or why, I decided my parents would never want me to be sad for an entire month of the year. So I stopped being sad in November. I have decided to do the same with gray Vermont days. I told my husband he has to limit his complaints about the weather and lack of snow as it impacts me. Everything we think has an impact. Everything we say has an impact. “Be careful what you’re thinking, your mind is listening “ I am doing all the things I love… Cooking, walking in the snowy woods, drawing and painting, writing, talking with friends on the phone, meditating, reading, drinking latte, and sketching @ I hope you are you taking care of yourself on these winter days. Make sure it is with lots of love and care. what you love.

Vermont inspired collage; made with rubber stamp, jelly, plate, and painted papers. The beauty here, at every turn, is astonishing, and I feel blessed to be here for the winter. This piece is on its way to Cape Cod to a friend who loves winter and the snow in Vermont. east Kingdom. .

It takes courage to be an artist… As I walked in the woods yesterday I thought of all the advice I would give to those brave enough to crossover to defining themselves as artists.
1) believe in yourself deeply
2) commit
3) do not look to others for validation
4) Be willing to be rejected
5) help other artist along the way
6) don’t worry about money , I strive to “cover my sins “
7) have an abundant mindset

I just bought this sweet handmade teapot at a store in Kittery , Maine at a thrift store .The Fabulous Find is a high-end nonprofit that donates thousands of dollars to local entities. Shopping here and finding great gifts and beautiful things has become my current obsession. This teapot was $14 and was to too sweet to resist. Someone banked many hours in pottery before they were adept enough to make this pot. I know because I’ve done pottery with the incredibly talented teacher and potter Crandall Huckins . Aka, Randy. How I loved that class, which was at the newly opened, Emerson umbrella for the arts, the brainchild and passion project of Ellie Bemis. It was her dream and a community effort, and is a thriving arts center today. I remember doing the photographs for the presentation almost 30 years ago and how excited everyone was. Thank you Ellie and Randy, and all the amazing people who were behind this effort. Concord, Massachusetts is lucky to have this thriving arts center. I decided that, as my pension for buying these unique vessels may be considered a bit out of control… That if I buy an object of beauty, I have to draw it the same day, a minimum of one blind contour, and one sketch. .

A dear friend just sent me this photo of a card I had done for her a few years ago , telling me how unique my work is, and trying to give me advice on marketing. Promoting my own work has never been some thing that I was comfortable with. I’m not uncomfortable with sharing, but trying to sell it and promote my art is not my wheelhouse. I try to encourage other people who are reticent about putting their work out there as I think that is very important. Some of the work that an artist does will never be shown and that’s OK but it does feel good to share it. I love doing these postcards. I can’t imagine life without the post office and being able to send artwork to friends. I am very grateful to be able to make my art and not worry about selling it. As long as I can make enough to cover my studio rent in my art supplies, I’m happy. media

Thoughts swirling through my head. Seeking clarity on where to go with my art; a truth revealed itself this morning. That words give meaning to so much of my art. Embedded, peeled away, discovered or not discovered, but lying there in the layers of my mark making. I want to explore, play, make marks without a plan;visual stories with ambiguity, which is so much of our lives. We love, we hate, we weep in despair at the utter brokenness of our beautiful world. I am a visual storyteller. thank you for shining a light on that, and for always being my artistic compass. .

I just went into Zoe’s room to turn off the light . Evidence of her busy doctoring …. At 3 1/2 , she is very committed to her work. Playing doctor is and has been a great passion of hers. She got her first doctor kit on her 2nd birthday from Peter’s childhood friend, Greg and his wife Sam. Since then she has been busy with bandaids and shots. She loves to put bandaids on her dollies and her stuffies. “ RaRa” , Peters raccoon has gotten the most bandaids as he has been her constant love object since she was a wee little one. RaRa was a baby gift from our friend , Tony Saizon and has been adored for 36 years.

Ryder, my beloved golden retriever, is snuggled up on the sofa next to me. His head is almost in my lap, and he is in a blissfully sound sleep. Every once in a while, he’ll stretch his paws, like a cat, and reposition himself ever so slightly. Maybe he’ll even moan a little. This is our morning routine. I wake as early as I can relishing these first quiet moments in the day. The only sound on our three season port is the heater perched on my green and yellow antique stool. Outside the squirrels blaze about, delighting me with their acrobatic antics. The glass slider opens, signaling the end to my writing time. It is 830 and my husband comes in to take the dogs out for their morning routine. Grateful for my hour and a half , my day begins
