Echo Farm
There is an important issue going on in the state regarding farm land. I am going to attempt to explain it as simply as possible and ask for your support.
Essentially, every 5 years the value of designated farmland is re-evaluated. Farmers pay taxes based on this value decided at the state level. For example, in 2020 the value of orchard farmland was estimated at $990 dollars. As a result, farmers would pay taxes based on that number for however many acres they had classified as orchard land. The proposed value now is $2,300.
I CANNOT stress enough how absolutely devastating this could be for CT agriculture. On Tuesday, farmers will convene at the legislative office building in Hartford to express how this proposed increase will impact their businesses (and then directly impact consumers and communities).
The hope is to have 20,000 signatures of support on this petition by Tuesday. I would ask all of our customers, friends, family members, consumers of CT agriculture, or anyone who eats to consider signing this.
