Three Generations. One Meaningful Visit.
We were pleased to welcome Major Beyea and his family—his wife, son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter. Their visit was especially meaningful as three generations came together to experience and connect with the stories preserved within our museum.

A West Point graduate, Major Beyea shared personal memories from his time at the Academy. We always enjoy hearing the experiences and memories of those who have walked the halls of our nation’s military institutions.

During their visit, the family also picked up their Hattiesburg Convention Commission passport, giving them the opportunity to continue exploring the many outstanding entertainment, cultural, and educational attractions that Hattiesburg has to offer!

Bring your curious learners in grades 3–5 to Science Saturday at Smith for:
🍓🔬“Berry Curious: Discovering the DNA in a Strawberry”🧬
Students will conduct a hands-on experiment to extract real DNA from a strawberry while learning about genetics, medicine, research and STEM careers.
Give your young learners an opportunity to move beyond simply reading about science and actually experience it. Join us on Saturday, September 12, 2026 at 11:00 a.m.

The Sixth Street Museum District will host Science Saturday at Smith on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. with 🍓🍓🍓 “Berry Curious: Discovering the DNA in a Strawberry,” a hands-on STEM experience designed especially for students in grades three through five.

Participants will have the opportunity to:
 Extract real DNA from a strawberry
 Learn how DNA helps shape living things
 Discover how scientists, pharmacists and doctors use DNA in medicine and research
 Explore exciting STEM careers and the many ways science can be used to solve real-world problems

Leading the program will be guest scientist Constance B. Shaw, a public health scientist who uses science and technology to help keep people healthy. Shaw works for the Mississippi State Department of Health, where she studies health information and helps address real-world public health challenges. Passionate about encouraging young people to ask questions and explore the world around
them, Shaw looks forward to introducing participants to the amazing world of DNA and inspiring them to consider the possibilities available through science and STEM-related careers.
