We have big news!
The Havre de Grace Maritime Museum and Environmental Center is part of a non-profit organization called the Head of Chesapeake Watershed Alliance. Please read through this press release to learn more about what we're a part of!

The Head of Chesapeake Watershed Alliance, Inc. announces their formation with a mission to be an advocate for the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed.
Members of the Alliance are comprised of five non-profit organizations including the Deer Creek Watershed Association Inc., Elk & North East Rivers Watershed Association Inc., the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum inc., the Legacy Land & Water Partners Inc., and the Octoraro Watershed Association Inc..
Our Alliance works to identify, prioritize, and address issues and problems in the head of the Chesapeake watersheds including water quality monitoring, conducting surveys of submerged aquatic vegetation in the critically important Susquehanna Flats, stormwater management, and importantly environmental education, which includes outreach to historically underserved communities. We work with government agencies and other regional non-profit environmental organizations and academic institutions.
For more information about the Head of Chesapeake Alliance, contact the President, Rupert Rossetti, at [email protected], or Meredith Maloney, Environmental Center Manager at the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum, at 410-939-4800.

Monarch butterflies are some of the most loved and recognized butterflies in the United States today. Sadly they have now been added to the “red list” and designated as an endangered species. Due to the use of pesticides and herbicides as well as destruction of their natural habitats it is estimated that as high as 75% of their population has dwindled since the 1990’s. It is due to this sad news that we want to take a moment to shout out these amazing little creatures and implore our readers to learn as much as you can about these little life forms. In this video by environmental center director Meredith Maloney, you can learn not only about their life cycles but what they need to survive. If we can all take a moment to do our part we know the population can and will thrive again. Please take a moment to learn more about these beautiful and interesting creatures as well as how their caterpillars become the stunning butterflies we all love and recognize every spring. Also please take a moment to check out our new Youtube channel for more interesting content like this.

The Environmental Learning Center is working hard this summer to monitor one of our most crucial underwater ecosystems - bay grasses, or sub-aquatic vegetation.
Sub-aquatic vegetation (SAVs) are essential for a healthy Bay. The Environmental Learning Center is collecting data on the diversity and abundance of SAVs as a part of the Chesapeake Bay Program program.
Check out some recent photos from our research efforts, as well as what our Environmental Learning Center Director Meredith Maloney has to say about the state of SAVs in a press release (below) from the Chesapeake Bay Program.
