Steppingstone Farm Museum

Steppingstone Farm Museum Preserving & interpreting the rural heritage of Harford County, MD. "The Steppingstone Museum provides a necessary look into the past. Edmund Bull, Founder
(277)

It was founded that we shall remember where we came from that we shall be able to look intelligently into the future. It is dedicated to the men and women of the past century in this community who found that labor was honorable and satisfying to the soul; who found that craftsmanship, excellently performed, is the essence of art." -J.

Treasures of the Past Tuesday!

Have you ever looked out over the Susquehanna River from Steppingstone's orchard and wondered about why the Giles family chose to put their home where they did?

When the original farmhouse was built 1771, the location was chosen relative to the Giles family merchant mills and strategically placed at a point so Nathaniel Giles could overlook the Susquehanna River and watch ships approach. Before the Conowingo Hydroelectric Dam was built in 1926, large shipping vessels were able to move freely up and down the lower length of the river, making Havre de Grace and the Rock Run area prime for early American industry. The view from the historic farmhouse spanned the length of the visible Susquehanna River and down into the area of the (now) Susquehanna Flats, and with the river higher and trees removed, Giles could see a lot more of the river than we can now!

🧺💛 Experience a living tradition—together.

At Steppingstone Farm Museum, we’re proud to share crafts that are still being practiced today, passed from hands to hands across generations. Join us for our Mini & Me Basket Weaving Workshop with the Deer Creek Basketry Guild and step directly into one of those traditions.

Basket weaving is more than a craft—it’s a living tradition that connects us to the people, skills, and everyday creativity of the past. In this workshop, children and their caregivers will learn side-by-side, just as these skills have been shared for generations.

This is hands-on history at its best: real materials, real techniques, and a real chance to slow down and create something meaningful together.

No experience needed—just curiosity and a willingness to try something new.

👨‍👩‍👧 Perfect for parents, grandparents & caregivers + children
🧺 Create a handmade basket together
🌿 Celebrate tradition through hands-on learning

Open Skies Thursday at Steppingstone

Beneath the wide blue skies at Steppingstone Farm Museum, the summer fields stretch across the landscape much as they once did generations ago. Tall grasses sway gently in the breeze, bordered by weathered split-rail fences that guide visitors along the paths of the Land of Promise.

In the distance stands the museum’s historic corn crib, a reminder of the agricultural traditions that shaped everyday life on the farm. Structures like this were once essential for storing and drying harvested crops, helping preserve an important food source used to sustain both families and livestock throughout the year.

Surrounded by open fields and framed by the tree line, the corn crib rests quietly within a landscape that still reflects the peaceful rhythm of rural Maryland. The bright sky overhead and the rolling meadow below offer the same sense of openness that generations before us would have known.

Next time you visit, take a walk along the fence line and enjoy the open skies stretching over the Land of Promise.

Treasures of the Past Tuesday:

Let's take a look back at the history of the museum! "A Step Back in Time" was written by former Executive Director, Linda Noll, in 1997. The document describes what makes Steppingstone so magical even almost 30 years later - how the stunning landscape and dedication to rural arts truly feels like stepping into the past.
