The Historical Society honors the life of John Probert, Hazleton's preeminent historian, who passed away on Tuesday. John's knowledge of the Mountain City was boundless. He had an insatiable appetite to learn, and his command of wide-ranging subjects should inspire others to solve those riddles of history, to turn every page.

John's meticulous caretaking of the Vine Street Cemetery, where he served as the long-time association president, reflected his sense of civic duty but also his love for Hazleton. We will never again encounter a man with such a breadth of knowledge, creative spirit, and commitment to his hometown. His memories of this city were vivid and captivating and went back to his early childhood.

John O'Hara is remembered as the chronicler of this region's past. John Probert knew far more—and he touched the lives of all who were lucky enough to talk to him, to learn from him.

We extend our condolences to the Probert family.
