SUBJECT: News Release – For Immediate Release
The Lewis and Clark County Historical Society (LCCHS) will present "Riding A Wooden Board At Top Speed," the history of stagecoaching in Montana at 7:00 PM, December 9th at the LCCHS History Center located in the downtown Steamboat Block, 618 Helena Avenue.
Stagecoaches followed the gold rush into Montana in 1864 and ran in Montana for over 80 years. Helena was a major stagecoach center for most of those years. Far from being overtaken by the railroads, stage lines in Montana prospered with the coming of the railroads into Montana.
With this presentation, you will meet Black Mary who drove a stagecoach from Cascade to Helena until she retired. Black Mary was just one of the colorful characters in Helena's stagecoach past.
John Shontz, president of the Lewis and Clark County Historical Society will be the featured speaker. He is a marketing / strategic planning executive and retired attorney. A fifth generation Montanan, Shontz has written extensively about railroads and transportation in Montana.
