🦣 vs 🦣! (look it’s not our fault there isn’t a mastodon emoji!)

It’s a question we get everyday here at WSC: what’s the difference between a mammoth and a mastodon? Actually quite a lot, but the easiest way to tell the difference is by looking at their teeth! 🦷

We just opened our new temporary exhibit on natural disasters: From Earthquakes to Epidemics! 🔥🌪️🌊 And from what we hear, our opening day was a bit immersive thanks to the winds from Tropical Storm Rachel!

Produced by Exhibit Envoy, From Earthquakes to Epidemics explores a fundamental reality of living in California: living here means living with natural disasters. To showcase what this means specifically for the City of Hemet, CA - City Government, we’ve teamed up with our community partners Hemet Ryan Air Attack Base, CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department and Mike Venable, who graciously loaned items for display in the ‘Wildfires’ portion of the exhibit.

Thanks to all who made this exhibit possible, and come check out From Earthquakes to Epidemics during your next visit to the Western Science Center!

Happy from all of us at the Western Science Center!

Say hello to 🦣 Harvey the Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi) 🦣 - he’s getting ready for his upcoming debut in Fossils of the Inland Empire, our new, in-progress permanent exhibit opening later this year. Found during the construction of the Harveston neighborhood City of Temecula, he’s a prime example of the incredible natural history hidden beneath our feet here in the IE.

On today’s National Fossil Day, and all the National Fossil Days to come, we’re proud to be the natural history museum of the Inland Empire!
