On this day, June 1, 1921, the Hershey Power Plant began operation. At the time it only had one smokestack, but in 1924 the second was added. This has become a symbol of Hershey and is a much photographed location right in the HHC’s backyard.

This late 19th century photo of three daring young ladies on a Sunday outing, posing on a rock cliff inside the 🧱Waltonville Brownstone Quarry, is an early example of the popular pursuit of getting a cool picture in an unusual place. And, in this case, a rather dangerous looking one! The horse-drawn wagon is typical of those used to transport the brownstone that was quarried in the area from around 1863-1929, and sold across the nation as a preferred masonry material of builders. The Hummelstown Brownstone Company, founded by Allen Walton, employed immigrant skilled stonecutters and laborers in its quarries.

Before the national civil rights movement gained momentum under the leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a local figure was already laying the groundwork for racial and economic justice. On Wednesday, June 17, 2026, 6-7:30pm, at the Hershey History Center, Eric Schubert will present “An Unsung Hero of Civil Rights: The Legacy of W. Miller Barbour”. This program is dedicated to uncovering the remarkable life of a local resident turned national human rights advocate, highlighting Barbour’s deep roots in the Hershey, Hummelstown, Middletown, and Elizabethtown communities.
