A huge thank you to Bob Robertson, Olie's Landscaping Crew, and Rose Burrafato for coordinating and finishing a rebuild of the rail fence between the Newbold White House and the vineyard! Years of weather, neglect, and half-hearted patching had left it rather ramshackle, but replacing rotten posts and rails with new ones, and moving worn but still solid sections to less visible locations gives the lawn of North Carolina's oldest brick house a nice face lift for the summer, our nation's 250th birthday, and the house's upcoming 300th birthday in just a few years. Thanks to all who made this possible!

With only a week's turn around time, the grounds of the Newbold White House were transformed from a Revolutionary War site to a festive garden setting for a fun and elegant celebration of America's 250th Anniversary, the 300th Anniversary of Abraham and Judith Sanders' purchase of "The Vineyard" in 1726, and the work of the Perquimans County Restoration Association and its volunteers in preserving and maintaining the site, and sharing the history of the house, its people, and Perquimans County with the public.

In addition to seeing Betsy Dowdy ride up on Black Bess, those in attendance could have their picture made with a life size portrait of Betsy Dowdy's famous Banker Pony who carried her through the night all the way from Currituck to Perquimans.
Other activities included creating a Colonial Post Card with volunteers from the Camden County Historical Society, experiencing Colonial games and toys with members of the Museum of the Albemarle Education Staff, learning about the fine art of bee keeping and honey production, having a taste of cider made from native Muscadine grapes, and seeing period appropriate costumes and hand sewing by Sandra Justiss. Camden County Historian Barbara Snowden was on hand in period dress as well, and "Abraham Sanders" (in the person of his sixth-great-grandson Glenn White) welcomed visitors to his 1730 brick home.

We were very fortunate to have Revolutionary War reenactors from regiments at Halifax and Tryon Palace with us to lend an air of authenticity to the spirit of the day. IN addition to taking part in the interaction between Betsy and Gen. Skinner, they offered a demonstration of the use of black powder in firing period correct muskets. It was amazing to see the myriad steps involved in loading the muskets for just one shot - which might or might not fire depending on the weather, humidity, and other conditions.

Always a star in our eyes, the Newbold White House was the perfect setting for Betsy's ride, especially since it was standing right here when she rode past 250 years ago to reach General William Skinner's home a short distance further up Harvey Point Road. Fronted by a display of thirteen flags from the early Revolutionary period, the sturdy home of Abraham and Judith Sanders made an excellent backdrop for the event, and was a central attraction for those who came to enjoy the day, many of whom had never visited before.

PCRA has certainly had a busy time this year! Fourth Grade Living History Day was followed closely by the Betsy Dowdy Rides Again! America 250 NC event, and the annual Garden Party was only a week after that. It has been a whirl wind ride for all of us. So, better late than never, here are a few photos of Betsy Dowdy Rides Again! A huge thank you to all the reenactors, vendors, exhibitors, and PCRA volunteers who made this event possible - and successful! Thanks, too, to all who came out to see Betsy ride in and warn General Skinner of the British advance on Great Bridge. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

We really do want to welcome you on Saturday, and there is room for all. Simply come to the party (Saturday, 2 until 5 pm) and you may register and pay on site. We'll be all set up and ready for you!
