This year marks the 150th anniversary of Mennonites settling in Marion County, where they created new lives on the Kansas prairie in villages much like the depiction below.

Many brought with them precious heirlooms from their homelands of Russia and Germany, carefully packed in large trunks. This particular trunk belonged to the Barkman family, who were largely responsible for introducing Turkey Red wheat in America. It is on display in the Heritage Alcove at CMBS.

A throwback to Tabor College students enjoying down time in the Student Center.
The new Gymnasium-Auditorium and Student Center at Tabor was dedicated Sept. 9, 1962. The gymnasium-auditorium with its large floor and stage was envisioned as a place available for many community, church and college functions, and the student center portion included “a large modern lounge,” snack bar, and book store.

Happy Tabor Day!
On this day April 30, 1918, the first Tabor College building caught fire and burned to the ground, leaving many to wonder if the school would close permanently. By the grace of God and the generosity of Tabor’s faculty, students, friends and neighbors, two new buildings – the college Administration Building (later known as the H.W. Lohrenz building) and Mary J. Regier Ladies Dormitory – were erected from the ashes. On April 30, 1920, the college moved in to its new home and classes were resumed even though the building was not entirely finished. The following year it was decided that April 30 would be known as “Tabor Day.”
