Thank you to everyone who attended our Annual Meeting of the Membership last night.

We know we invited the general public, but we did not intend to extend that invitation to the rooster that was roaming Hillsboro yesterday 😅 Right after the picture was taken, it flew into the tree, and did not attend the meeting nor vote 😉

Some items of note from the meeting:

● John Levo resigned as Chairman of the Board effective immediately and will leave the Board of Trustees at the end of this year. Debbie Williams will replace him as Chairman and Carolyn Kellis was voted to fill his trustee position for the remaining 2 years

● Steve Roush was re-elected as President

● Sue Boatman, who had filled Bob Brown's position as Vice President, was elected as Vice President

● Kathe Chaney, John Duncan, and Jim Olderham were each elected as trustees for 3-year terms

● Christine Hamlin, elected second term as treasure as a trustee
● The two proposed changes to the by-laws were voted on and approved by the membership. An updated version of the by-laws will soon be available on our website and by request at the Museum.

Tomorrow evening is our Annual Meeting of the Membership at 7pm at the Highland House Museum.

Though attendance is not mandatory, current members are encouraged to attend.

The general public is welcome to attend but only members will be allowed to vote.

🚨 NOTICE TO THE MEMBERSHIP 🚨

The Historical Society will hold their Annual Meeting on Thursday, October 15, 2026 at 7:00pm at the Highland House Museum at 151 East Main Street in Hillsboro.

Trustees will be elected and a presentation of proposed changes in by-laws will be discussed.

Your attendance and participation are encouraged.

Did you know that we have vintage copies of the Hillsboro High School yearbook "The Tomahawk" for sale in our shop?

Shop hours:
Friday and Saturday 1 pm to 4 pm

Please note that we may only have one copy of any available year, the yearbooks are used and may have some wear and tear and writing in them. Please visit to check them out in person.

Indigenous Peoples' Day is a day to honor the history, culture, and contributions of our country's first people.

The Highland House Museum has an Indigenous People Room on the second floor (top of the stairs, turn left, straight back). We hope you'll take a look the next time you're in for a visit.

We are fortunate to live in an area so close to many different ancient earthworks sites: Fort Hill, Fort Ancient, and Serpent Mound just to name a few. Have you visited any of these places or others?

One decision changed the lives of generations.

When Samuel Gist died in 1815, his will directed that the enslaved people connected to his estate be freed. Because Virginia law required freed individuals to leave the state, a trust was established to support their relocation.

Approximately 2,200 acres were purchased in Ohio, and hundreds of people began the difficult journey toward building new lives in an unfamiliar place.

That journey became part of the history of Gist Settlement, a history we remain committed to preserving and sharing.
