August Meeting Memories We're collecting memories of the annual August Meeting (also known as "The Big Bridge Meeting"). Did you attend? What do you remember? When and where TBD.

We plan to meet August 10,2025 to commemorate what was once the social event of the year in Carroll County. We are planning on meeting in memory of the August Meeting (also known as "The Big Bridge Meeting." In preparation we are collecting stories on this page. Did you attend the August Meeting?

There is still hope of an August Meeting Commemoration, but we certainly will not disrespect the rules of the Friends of New Hope. There was never a presumption of using the church or church grounds as we did not know if the building was even safe. August Meeting Memories page will update as to when and where if a Commemoration takes place. In the meantime, let's encourage our area's Primitive Baptist Churches by attendance and support, and let's not forget this precious heritage that was so strong in Carroll County since the 1700's. Peace.

The annual August Meeting in Carroll County, Virginia, was held on the second Sunday of August at the New Hope Primitive Baptist Church next to the covered bridge at Big Reed Island Creek on Highway 221 (Floyd Pike), and the Big Bridge Store.

The Cover photo is one that Jo Lynn Newman has. Many remember getting new clothes for what was the social event of the year. Others remember walking considerable distances to attend, and enjoy ice cream and watermelon. Vendors set up tables, neighbors caught up on recent gossip, and rowdies raised a ruckus at what actually began simply as the yearly communion and foot-washing of the Primitive Baptists in association with New Hope Primitive Baptist Church.
